when they did me for the same they said they have no way of testing for noise just sort it youth. In the end they couldnt really do much as they couldnt give me a leave to bring the noise down to.

There is a legall DB limit i think you'l find. + police reform act , they can impound your car (100% legally) and make you pay ?125 to get it back if you don't be a nice boy.

well they pulled me in november (vosa inspectors) and said it was too loud

they stood at the back of the car and positioned a sound meter about 0.5m away from the tailpipe and asked me to "rev the engine a bit"

then declared my car was 108db which was too loud (no mention of the actual limit etc)

gave me a ?30 fine for a "defective exhaust"

i went to the law library and uni and dug around and finally found the required legislation - road vehicles construction and use regulations 1986

turns out there IS a decibel limit (79db iirc) however it requires a specific test procedure as noise level varies poroportional to the square of the distance

the law states the test must be run at half the max engine rpm or half the rpm at which the engine develops peak power - whichever is lower, then they must place the microphone 7m away perpendicular to the side of the vehicle and take a measurement, then repeat this at the other side of the car then take an average

i didnt pay the fine and was going to take it to court - they cant fine me when the folk testing the car didnt have a fucking clue what they are doing, with me randomly revving the engine and the mic in the totally wrong place

ive not heard anything about it yet, no NIP or court date etc.

so either they are being fucking slow or the procurator fiscal have thrown it out due to lack of evidence

the police around my way spend too much time eating donuts and dont actually know anything about the law apart from thats illegal, they cant give a valid reason apart from its illegal.

just take it to an mot place mate - they'll probably pass it as they wont have a clue and they'll check for leaks (deffective exhaust) then you can stick two fingers up at the coppers
