My girlfriend 1.2 keeps stalling for 10 minutes after starting. Starts ok sometimes, sometimes it dies straight away.
Have had mixture and timing checked and told by 2 places its ok.
Seems to drink petrol in the cold weather and smells of petrol.
Shes told me that she has to balance the choke for the first 10 minutes or so, too much and it stalls to little and it stalls. Then when she gets to a junction it stalls under braking.
Once the spring is here and its warmer it will be fine again. Need help or she'll take my car instead!!!
Engine seems to ok in warm weather, will happily hit 90-95 beforte it runs out of power and is still nippy when running ok.

I know its a bit cheeky to turn up and ask this question but i'm at my wits end, Cheers. :(

i take it it's a carb ? and not an SPi ?

if it is a carb.. does it have a K&N style filter, if so you may be expiriencing carb icing.

Apart from that it sounds like a similar problem i have, blocked idle jets on the carb. You could try stripping the carb completly and getting a reptable garage to set it up properly.

Standard carb with normal filter i'm afraid no mods or additions at all on this car!!!

what is carb icing, and how do you stop it?

hi there i have a 1.2 j-plate flair as well.. mines got 30k on the clock and its a real pig in the cold mornings

most mornings it will start first time but to much or to little choke and it will die,, under breaking it will die..like u said after 10mins and its fine.mine drinks fuel when cold and stinks of it when i get to work.

1 thing i have found is sitting there with choke half out and rev the car lightley for about 1min then it will idel fine.

by the way standard air box cars got no mods

could well be carb icing, give it a bit more choke perhaps.

As I said earlier if we use more choke it dies if we use less it dies we hav to constantly adjust the choke while driving!

Had a play with it yesterday and found that the 2 hoses from the manifold to the air filter housing wer blocked with a gungey yellowy/brown sludge and that the larger hose was twisted over on itself. Have replaced both hoses and it has made a big difference. the car only stalled once this morning, but that could be having to get used to the choke again as the feel of the car is different.
It seems to have a delay between hiting the accelerator and it actually making a difference, infact the engine seems to drop first then spped up!

Any more thoughts would be great though.

could be clogged jets causeing the dieing on opening throttle

as for the choke - thats normal, use too much and u throttle the engine and it cuts out, dont use enough and u dont richen the mixture enough so it stalls

contrary to popular belief the choke doesnt just add more petrol it restricts airflow into the carb, u jam the choke open and it will die becuase it cant suck enough air in

Had the engine going without the filter on the carb and throtled it up and down slowly, jet seemed to be spraying juice in ok. The choke at this point was all the way in but if you hit the throttle with a big burst it either died or had a big lull before revving up. :?
Had a similar problem on an escort b4 god knows how i solved that but it just started working again, even in the cold!!!

go over the HT system to ensure that works ok first

eg new leads, rotor arm, cap, plugs etc

i have same problem altho what i do is drive it around a little let it warm up then stop rev it up then let it cut out and start her up again seems to do the trick.

Ditto. after it stalls for the swecond or third time it seems to clear itself and then drives fine. Its just apig to drive before that!!!

the reason they stall on breaking is servo taking air from the manifold! :)

id check feul filter pump and that the carb is shutting of as the float might be stuck open

Try some carberutter cleaner spray aswell, cleared my carb/air intake system out a treat! Best to take the air filter off, spray it down the choke into the carb itself. Leave it 10 mins then start it up. That will unclog the crap thats built up in the carb! May help a little bit. Helped mine a bit any ways :)

Think its solved. used some red-x in the carb and petrol last nigh and then took the car for a spin to blow out the cobwebbs. This morning girlfriend drove all way in with no stalling. will check the fuel pump and filter when i get time and also change oil and filter but so far its a thumbs up!!!
