g max 40mm lowering suspension

I have just fitted the above to my mk1 and the car is violently steering left is it normal for this to happen ?

Well its obviously not normal.
Did you tighten all the nuts back up, sounds like your tracking is well out, it will be out after lowering the suspension, but not by how much you are describing.

Check everything is torqued up right etc.
