Just wondering what people's experiences/recommendations are on "premium" petrol? Is it worth paying the extra, and if so which perform the best? Also, any thoughts on petrol additives?

all minimal mate. really the only additives/treatments that work are the un-block/un-clog the carb/inject jobbies; they can clear the 'cobwebs' out makin car feel bit healthier.. "NOS" do an octain booster thats supposed to up it by 3, so add that to optimax and ur over 100 octane there; but i dont think it'd really do owt.

the octane booster will say "increase octane rating by 3 points"

this is very ambigous and normally means 95 to 95.3

the reason for this is to get upto 100octane u'd need about 1/4 tank of toluene and 3/4 tank super unleaded

toluene isnt cheap and u arent gonna get 2 gallon bottles in any halfords near you

so u arent getting anywhere near 100octane with some silly booster

however if u run your car on super u can advance the timing a bit which will give more power (advance it at the dizzy till it pinks then back off a bit)

Mine will only run properly on Super. It pinks very badly on premium! Ive been told it could have something to do with the compression after having the 1.2 head. Any thoughts?

back the ignition timing off and run regualr UL lol

jim used a rather good fuel booster that was quite expensive but never the less its good. ill ge tthe name of it off him at the weekend.

when we say goo i think it gave about 4bhp more without touching the timing and then with the timing advance it gave 8-9bhp more.

but then again it was a "small" percentage increase on a fairly high number so on in yer average 1.4 running 85bhp you might see a 3-4 bhp increase from the stuff.

My timing was sorted out last week by the rolling road when I had the cam set up. So I will give it a try. Also, Why does my car pop loud when you rev it up. Its nice to give alittle rev when fiestas start hardcore revving there car next to you, Just give a little back pop & let em spin off like pr*tts!

When they do that just let them shoot off an spin it on the first corner into a tree or barrier, then drive past slowly with your window down and shout abuse while sticking yours fingers up at them.
Thats the most mature thing to do

Lol @ Phil!

Unless the car is mapped for 98 RON fuel, it aint gonna do shit!
Is your car an import Jack? im assuming it is? will prob lose power if run on 95 RON.

Its the UK version, but still the pretty much the same as the Jap ones afaik? I seem to recall hearing somewhere that they have better quality fuels over there with a higher RON rating than ours - so thinking it might be good for the engine to run it on "better" fuel in terms of a) performance and b) looking after the engine. Or drop in some additives to keep it all clean inside lol.

i do notice that my car runs better on premium unleaded (only used it once or twice) i do also notice that my car runs better on certain fuel stations fuel.

i.e texaco,Shell,BP e.t.c are all fine

Certain Esso's and Definetly every supermarket makes my car run a little odd.

i'd stay away from Supermarket fuel, stick to a quality recognised filling station, maybe use some of the addative injector cleaner, and keep the engine well serviced and maintained.

you'd do more damage by not changing the oil enough, than not using premium unleaded.

lol! imagine going to a mechanic and saying that....

The oil is being changed every 6-9k, Castrol Magnatec

it's just shit fuel basically, that's why it tends to be cheaper. my dad had a scooter a while back and that had no-end of problems when running it on fuel from a supermarket.

Castrol magnatec is good for high performance big engines

however, i've heard it's bad for low performance small engines due to the "magnatec" propeties doing more bad than good.

Asda/tesco etc use the same fuel as shell etc. Dont believe the hype.

Jack just try both, although if its a uk spec car it will be mapped for 95/98 RON fuel. AFAIK Japan uses 100RON fuel...

One final thing that has come to my notice is petrol ?going off? if left some time, a bit of research on my part and a couple of experiments has proved to me at least that cheap supermarket petrol goes off, e.g. loses it?s volatility far quicker than branded fuel. My research suggests that to keep the cost down the supermarkets leave out some of the additives used in branded fuels that preserve it?s volatility (and other things). If you fill your car each week when you do your shopping this is of little consequence, having said that take a look at your plugs if you run on supermarket petrol then have a look after you run on branded petrol, but if you do not use your vehicle it could be (we have worked on several bikes that refuse to start on old supermarket petrol) difficult to start. I use branded fuel from the garage nearest the supermarket as it?s the same price. Just think why it?s hard to find a garage in the middle of nowhere these days before you buy your petrol at the supermarket.

it's not just me

Lol at Phil, I give em abuse anyway for underestimating my little 1.4. Lol.

But I have to agree with Nick, My aprilia rs 125-I know, I know...Dont start about the 125, Its fast really!
It runs bad on supermarket fuel. I dont know whether supermarkets tend to flush the perol tanks less or what, But I do know it makes my bike run bad. It also caused my carb on my scooter to keep getting blocked-When it ran on shell for 6 months fine. Could be something in what he's saying. Although I do accept a mechanic would laugh, Coz the bike shop did when I returned my scooter-It was under warranty-They laughed at first, But said they had experienced related problems in the past.

Well... been running for a few days on premium unleaded from BP (98RON I think it is).... engine seems to be running a bit smoother (especially under load), and early fuel consumption indications look good, but this could be just be psychological differences. I have however noticed the exhaust seems to smoke a little less too. I'll give it another tank or so to flush all the "normal" unleaded out and see if its made anything better then... perhaps then switch back to supermarket unleaded for a while and see if there's any adverse affects.

You might as well just drop some normal unleded in,and a drop of that addative also,as i found the "supper unleaded" stuff no real diff, appart from coasting WAY more per liter..

i've been running mine on BP Ultimate exclusivley for over 12 months now. (apart from the couple times i was real low and could only get Esso Super).

No problems and general running is smooth, even with a raised compression ratio.

My sister had problems with her Mk3a escort running on supermarket fuel.
