A lot of companies insure a car with an engine conversion as if it were the donor car.... so for a 1600 Merit they'd insure it as if it was a GTE/GSi (assuming thats your donor)

So with that in mind, When I get my engine converted-Im best buying an Astra GTE 16v rather then a Calibra 16v redtop? As the Astra is a few hundred quid cheaper then a calibra to insure. Still loads though!!! :?

*cough*CAVALIER SRi!*cough*

Thats got the lowest insurance group out of the three (Astra, Cav, Calibra).

yep they're wanting to charge me ?1600 FPTF for my conversion from a 1.2 to a 1.6

they don't insure it as the donor car, as a GSi would be ?1300 TPTF

they insure it as the donor car, with a nice chunk wapped ontop.

Umm they do insure it as doner car mate, mine was insured as a Calibra, lol little white lie,but it was grp 14 insted of grp 15,also when my papers came through though it was down as..

Calibra 20.16v/turbo transplant,plus brakes,urate susrension,and exhaust..

I rang them stright away and said its not a turbo, they told me they know its not but they put it in the same class,i said no way,so your telling me if i drop a turbo in it wont be much more then now,she said that right, just the addmin fee to change it all over sir.. :o though fcuk wish i know that before,im with flux..

Nice, Well im 18 & cant get insured on such a big engine yet, But im Happy with mine at the mo running just over 100bhp at the wheels on a 1.4. Its cost alot too! But Ive always thought your car was really smart. Be nice with 200+bhp.

Lol, scott, they obvisouly don't insure it as a donor car

?1250 for a GSi

?1600 for a 1.2-E16SE conversion.

they maybe have insured you as a calibra because your a bit of an old-timer lol

In response to Scott's post, can anybody tell me why the 1400 Nova SR is 2 groups higher than the 1300? Just wanted to know the difference between mine and a 1.3 SR

Jack
27-05-05, 12:30 PM
1.4 is newer? lol dunno tbh. All down to CC I'd guess.

Edit: Interestingly enough (yawn) the 1.4SR is only 2-4bhp over the 1.3SR, yet two insurance groups higher. The 1.4SRi is almost 20bhp more than the 1.4SR - yet both are insurance group 7

SRi will probably be a little bit more expensive anyway as Mk2s seem to be a few quid more on insurance than Mk1s (~?20-100)

27-05-05, 12:35 PM
well i aint got a clue lol, i know theres the extra 100cc or so but i cant imagine mine being all that much quicker than a 1300, can you?

Just out of interest, mines got the close ratio F10? gearbox, what did the 1300 have coz that will affect acceleration...

boy i cnt spell today lol

Jack
27-05-05, 12:39 PM
lol! AFAIK the biggest difference between the two is the gearbox ratios... I'll leave it to someone more technical to explain the pros and cons of each one tho

27-05-05, 01:22 PM
i know the F10 is supposed to be a good box, but i dont know how a 1300 would compare to mine off the mark
