View Full Version : webspace. what ,how, who?
i am going to register a domain, i know the name i want and i know how much stuff i want online but i don't know what all the technical stuff means. if i have 100mb of webspace and 100mb bandwidth, what's the difference?
cheers
ben.
your webspace is how much you can store on your site
your bandwith is how much your site is allowed to be accessed
eg if you host videos ,then say it is a 15mb vid then downloading it once will use 15mb
so if my site is full of videos, how much bandwidth should i realistically expect to ue?

It will depend how many people want to see your vids.
So if you have one 25mb vid, and a 100mb bandwidth, then 100/25=4, so 4 people can download the vid at one time.
I think thats how it works.
If it says you have "100mb bandwidth per month" then once that is used up your site will be "stopped" until the next month.
So as above, if you had a 25mb vid and 4 people viewed it then your site will be stopped until next month.
it could be 100mb per month or something
which means 4 people a month can download a 25mb vid.
it also depends on who youre with - some companies will charge you if you go over your allocated bandwidth.
for vids it also depends on the quality and length - for example an average 1 minute vid at standard interenet resoluton (pishy) will be about 3 meg.
www.123reg.co.uk look quite good, offer a fair size bandwidth on their webspace services too.
does this sound good?

but what does the "?" and the "*"
...is it 2.99 a month after you've paid 50 initailly or do you just start at 2.99 a month?
I think those prices are ex. VAT so hence the "?", if thats from 123reg then there should be a link to show prices inc VAT?
The per month thing probably means that, rather than paying ?2.99 a month, you pay a lump sum every 12 months of ?36ish or whatever it works out as.
