Right,
looking between a 1.2i or a 1400 SR.
Would it be best to start with the 1.2i and have cheaper insurance, but suffer the performance.
Or go for the 1.4SR, pay ?400 more insurance, but have decent performance, and have an engine that you can easily swap carbs etc on to give more power when insurance stops killing me.

Any input? :D

I would do as Riggy said - get a carb'd 1.2. Bit more poke than a 1.2i and a lot less to insure than a 1.4sr :D

Do the !.2 carb, then save that extra money, and in a year or to you will them be old enough to insure either GTE or GSI,and have saved the mony you would of paid out on insurance on the sr to buy the gte/gsi..

If you've already got driving experience then get the SR (?400 difference in insurance for nearly double the power isn't too bad, if you can afford it!). If not, then get the 1.2i for a year or so.

Been driving for about 8months or so now.
I can insure a 1.2carb for less than a 1.2i which doesn't really make sense, but thats how it is.
And you can get the 1.2carb to 1.4 performance with a carb swap etc.

The only problem is now finding a 1.2carb, one that hasn't rusted to pieces.

Anyone selling?
Preferably a 1.2carb thinking about it, but maybe a 1.4SR if i can afford the insurance.

Double the power :?
It adds about 16bhp onto the 1.2carb engine :D

lol yeah, ignore me I'm talking out my arse again.... I was thinking 1.2 SPi (45bhp) to the 1.4 MPi (82? bhp)...

When you say the 1.2i is more to insure than the 1.2 carb, are you getting quotes on both Mk2s? From memory when I was looking for quotes aaaages ago, if the system thought my car was a Mk1 (pre 91) it was ?50 less than a Mk2 (91-93) :?

Have you also considered the other stuff aside from the performance? SR has better styling, nicer seats, dials etc... all stuff you can change, but nice to have it there to start with

Get the SR/SRi, My 1.2 was painfully slow, always regretted not getting an SR/SRi.

yeah but if you had an sr to start with it may of been to quick for you.

it depends really i suppose, some people are better at learning and getting experiance than others.

I personally just went for the 1.4SR first choice but as everyone has said it depends on what you want! :D

Yeah they have better seats etc, but that is easy to swap over, and saving ?500 on insurance could buy me a gte in the future.

Still unsure what to do, after driving my astra for a few months i think even a 1.2 carb nova would seem a lot better than the astra.
But if i got 1400 then i could keep the car for longer, as i wouldn't see the need for more power.

The quotes were on a mk2 1.2i, and a mk1 1.2carb, the 1.2i was ?200 more to insure than the carb, and yet the carb is more powerful, and a higher insurance group.

Luxe Plus is still group 4 for some reason. Difference is probably due to Mk2 being newer tho? ?200 is probably about the same ratio difference as the ?50 difference I was getting when I looked around.

well mate i had a 1.2i as my first car and have just got a 1.4 SR about a month ago

don't get the 1.2i its power is ok for round town etc but you'll soon get sick of having nothing fun. I'd go for the 1.2 carb or pay the extra money for the SR
