AGES ago i bought the following;

Sony: XM-502Z - 2 channel Amplifier - 250w
2 x 100 Watts Max @ 4 OHM.
2 x 50 Watts RMS @ 4 OHM.
2 x 125 Watts Max @ 2 OHM.
2 x 60 Watts RMS @ 2 OHM.
1 x 250 Watts Max @ 4 OHM Bridged.
1 x 120 Watts RMS @ 4 OHM Bridged.

SONY-XS-L121P5 - 12" 1200w peak
12" Pentagon series
Rubber surround
Frequency response 18-2000Hz
Power range 80-350watts RMS
Peak power handling 1200 watts
Sensitivity 89dB

So i bought a Renegade amp wiring kit, got a mate to help - and fitted it. Worked for about 30mins then we realised the ground wasn't connected too well and before taking the live off/disconnecting we moved it and POP!

So i got it repaired - was apparently the transformer that went - so i got that repaired. But now it won't work with my subwoofer - rang the sony repair centre up - they say it can't handle subs and is only meant for speakers!? The sub works for a split second then cuts out - but my 6x9's work really well on the amp! But i wanna Sub! :(

Is this correct? I know Sony aren't the greatest but i just want something with a punch. I have been wiring it up bridged btw,

HELP please guys!

Thanks,

Jim

if the repair place ses its not for subs theres a good chance it aint and are you sure you can run it bridged?

Well i originally had it running bridged - it has a switch on it.

Selectable Low Pass Filter OFF/80Hz.

One for a bridged subwoofer, and one for a set of speakers.

Should a 250w Amp be able to run a 1200w (350w) sub?

Thanks guys

Jim

If its a 250W amp then you've got a 1200W sub  but yes; that amp should be able to run the sub but its not the best amp to use for the job though -

1 x 120 Watts RMS @ 4 OHM Bridged.

...Consider your Sony Sub runs at 350W RMS @ 4ohm, the amp is way underpowered.

Have you got the sub wired into the outputs right? Checked the amp isn't overheating?

The amp doesn't even get the chance to overheat mate, just get a seconds worth of Bass when it does power the sub then it cuts out.

So i need a new amp then :( ?

Did you say it was working Ok when running 6x9s, its just the sub it doesn't like? Weird...

p.s.... did you get me pm about the glass postage prices?

Ok, so i think we have established that YES< My amp won't power the sub

Any thoughts on a good amp that i could use to power the sony 12" sub please?

Thanks
