Yes and Yes.

The SE is MPi.

so if both were running t-40s the se wud still have more power.?

Yeah as its got more power to begin with  :D
The SE has a lot more wiring you would have to remove with it being mpi also.
But go for the SE out the two engines, spi sucks.

Just read your first post again, and remembered that its the injection system that gives the se more power, so if you are dumping injection for carbs there won't be a massive difference as they are the same capacity etc.
But i am pretty sure that there are different pistons in the se, and better compression.
So, still go for the se, but it will be closer than i first thought.

Iv got gte engine in my nova on a 1.8 carb, an se. it smokes at the mo, wuz gunna rebuild it but iv jst found a brand new one for 350 quid, fully re-cond but its an nz. can i jst swap the heads over?

Yes you can swap the heads over, but make sure that it's not your valve stem seals that are making it smoke.

The SE cylinder head is worth at least 10bhp over the NZ one, so it's not just the MPi that makes the difference that was previously stated.

more than 10bhp differnece

nz is 70bhp
se is 100

se has better cam, better head, mpi and a higher compression ratio

find a 16se outta astra mk3 1.6 gls and that will be your best bet - less chance of being ragged too if its from an astra

so the nz and se blocks are the smae and the compression is in the head not the pistion.?

some SE's have a crank position sensor also, and an auto belt tensioner.

I doubt the NZ with have an auto tensioner. Just use a different belt and use water pump to tension.

every vaux engine after 91 has auto tensioner and if its got a coil pack it will have crank sensor ;)

i think the head is a similar design to the 1.4sr (square ports).

how are the pistons different? That ain't an old big block 1.6 is it?

Rob-16v

is it no good? it runs out soon, and i need an engine!

Aragorn

right:
the head has sr style square ports so its pretty shite
the cam in it has low lift compared to the normal mpi engines
the pistons have slightly different crowns as the compression ratio is different

u could run that block with an SE head and it would work but the compression would be quite low

if your gonna start swapping bits aroudn why not just buy a C16se from scrappy and rebuild it

iv got a c16se in at the mo, its like 300 quid too rebuild it. thanks for your help anyway ppl.

by the time uve paid ?200 for that engine (min bid + shipping) stripped it down and swapped heads around and paid for the parts to rebuild it u may as well have started with your existing engine and rebuild that
