View Full Version : Donington trackday, with videos
just got back in, i had a great day. the new breaks were very good and the car never missed a beat all day (apart from not starting)
i had some good tussels including a good one with chris 16v and his mate in a 106 rally, we were very evenly matched. the only nova that passed me was a 2.0l 16v with a very good driver. i managed to pass 2 other 2.0 16v's,a 1.6 8v on carb's, a nova gsi, a mk3 astra gsi with 2 great big tail pipes, and quite a few other stuff. i was well happy with the car and my best time until the last session was 1min28. then the driver of the quick 2.0 16v(can't remember your name mate) said i should adjust the rear damping. what a difference that made, i shaved 2 seconds off in one session, and it was still too stiff, god knows what i would of done with more messing about. so my best time was 1min26.
i have a few pic's but not many, and i have 2 video's one of me chasing a red 2.0 16v and one of me chasing the 106 rally, i think my mate got a few aswell, i will get them uploaded asap.
look out for total vauxhall i a few months it should be in there.

it was an ace day. definately worth every penny. i just need to buy some coilovers if im gonna be doing more trackday's. most cars there had coilovers i think. still, i didn't handle that bad. the engine was awesome, didn't miss a beat, although ive just got back and 1 of my carbs is leaking fuel :x

the tyres were awesome mate wasn't impressed with them at first, but after a couple of sesions they were good. i just need a decent suspension set up. i kept getting understeer. lol i got understeer bigtime when you was behind and locked up. have you got it on video.
my mate got that on video, and you shooting flames

Name's Martin by the way. just been watching the track day videos.. timed my best lap on screen at 1min31.38.. we're thinking your timing gear was a lil optimistic.. but well done for trying.. you had a good battle wit that 106!!!.. i was very happy with the car today. we put in some v scorching laps.. would like to know what other people got today.. but you gotta have proof of times!!!! i.e video. look out for the car in total vauxhall.. they did a little feature on us. just like to say well done to matt in the blue nova smoker!"!!! and to olly hewitt.. well done on your first track day... you were driving well... dont let cambelt cover kid put you down.. and also good on to jonlem the owner of the car.. who let me mercilessly rinse the utter fcuk out of it all day. i hope i entertained you all today with my driving.. havent been on donny for like 10 years!! since i was a kid in a kart..

Our best time when we were at Donnington last was 1 min 32 dead on road tyres.

You sure CP? I know not to question your faultless memory but thought we were in the low 1:20's, quicker than the single seater that we were sharing a garage with till the dad took it out and showed how it should be driven?
I think The times quoted by Beni are believable, he knows the circuit very well and has a well sorted 1400.
Talking of timing gear, how are you doing it, friend on the pit wall being discreet?

yeah, in car it was a kartronix sensor and on the pit wall was a mate with a beacon, don't know how it can be wrong really? pass the beacon and the timer starts, pass again and it log's the lap time. the only thing that could cause a problem is if there were 2 beacons on the pit wall, but thenit would of read:
example
lap 1, 1min30
lap2, 10 seconds
lap3, 1min 30
lap4, 10 seconds.
and it didn't

I actually believe you might be correct (not just saying that to make you feel better about getting old), but I do think we were hindered by oil leaks, rain and your brother!
Our times are normally comparible with the Toyo tyres series and last time they used Donnington in 2001, the times ranged between 1:24 and 1:36.
I like the circuit and would like to go back soon, CP?

didn't think the track was going to be that dry. thought it was going to be wet or really slippery
really dunno how acurrate the timing is, but seeing as demon tweeks charged ?170 for the kit i would hope it was pretty close.
and the 1min26 wasn't just one lap, i did 2x 1min 26, 1x 1min27, and a load of 1min28
the vid's are the afternoon sessions, the morning one's were a bit slippy

the best one we got was early in the day, there was 3 nova's in front of me and i passed them all, pretty quickly aswell so it was all on camera. but then the card fucked up and deleted it.

was a top day out... really enjoyed myself even though i was only watching. it was good to see all jonlems work paid off and was all worth it.

Wish i coulc of been there now,you doing combe in april? there is allso anoth PVG exclusive track day in august,looks good it's a massive oval sprint with a few bends in,its in south wales..

The dates for next years Action Days will be Saturday April 23rd and Saturday September 10th. The September date is new and replaces previous years June dates. We'll have a stand at both of these days. Entry tickets and track time will be available here, in the members section.
PS: this is the next PVG members only Track day venue they have lind up,looks ace,open it and see the track :P

i'll be at coombe in april. and i will more than likely be at llandow in august.
i was right on nath's bumper and he locked up, my first instinct was to follow my line because i thought he would of moved by the time i went past, then at the last second i decided to hit the brakes. good job i did. blue with red stripes don't look good.

Was a quality day! I was in Oli (DHDev) 1.6 16v on TB's all day. He did 5 sessions, 3 of which we got black flagged :x First because we were too loud on the drive by (100db and the limit was 98db) then for taking the piss and driving really slowly past the mic :lol: Then for smoking loads (Oil coming out of breather onto the exhaust wrap, but the officials thought we were dropping loads of oil)
Benji, once again you were flying mate! I clocked Oli at around 1min 33secs but down the pitstraight we were really gentle on the throttle and changing early so not to get banned!
How innoying were those Beetles!!!!!!! Arghhhhhh.... every session we seemed to get stuck behind them! And they just didn't move over! One even pushed us straight on at chicain and we had to go through the cones!
It was great to see so many Novas taking to the track! Well done all that drove! and Olly Hewit for spinning after the chequered flag..... hehehe, good lad.

Check the lap distance.................. it's only 1450m and a lot twistier than that aerial shot suggests. The top right corner of that photo shows the off circuit chicane which is used on every trackday/sprint.
If You get the right line through there You can lift inner rear wheels approx 4" off the floor on every one of those bends. Don't think a 2l valver would live with a good small block Nova on this circuit at all :lol:

Was a fantastic day - really enjoyed it.
Does anyone know if the guy in the white Pug 106 Rallye had an in-car cam? as he was on my tail for alot of the sessions, even when I came off :lol:

Dont worry sean,there will be a few good day's out with the pvg,you will enjoy it a lot more if you get to grips with track driving on a nice tight sprint track like curbourugh first,as that was quite demanding,and once you get the taste you wont want to stop,im hooked for life now!

Olly, No unforunately we didnt have an in-car cam in the 106 but we had a brilliant day. I was a bit gutted with the session that I had driving the rally as it got stopped then I was stuck behind the beetles and the puma. But yeah top day, just cant wait for mine to be built up now and ready for some track action, although I think I am going to leave it until after the RING lol

Hello Lads, was a good day with some good driving, MK1 dark Red Nova was flying! Felt sorry for the silver Astra, looked at me with a gutted look on the face when getting towed back in the pits!
I came up with a few lads and sat in the stands, some of you may have spotted me wandering around in my russian hat.

It was an fantastic day! Went with Jon, Martin, Stacey and Matt.
Made me realise a few things about my own car, its going to be an animal for starters lol and it should only live on the track to get the best from it.
All the nova's were doing really well and defiantly the car of the day.
Went out with Jon (White 16v) What an experience!! Awsome and Matt (Blue 16v) took me for a spin, was very impressed with his driving for his 1st track day, i only hope im as good ;-)

Was a top day out and i dont think i shut up all day! Was really good just to walk round and have a chat with everyone for a change and got to meet some new faces. Sorry if i was a little quite at times though, i was suffering from a hangover :lol:
The novas really did rule, was a shame it was so busy though in the main session as they all seemed to be getting held back.
My cars of the day were Oli D's dhdev, and lee H's which was amazing! what a noise from you pair. Shame i didnt get to go out in any but theres allways next time.
I had a bit of a play on my way out with the evo boys, and had a scarry moment when i got a fuel cut in 5th gear though i wont disclose my speed at the time :oops:

:? um well seems like there are 2 explanations - either you are faster than us or the time i had saved on my phone wasn't the best one like i thought it was - i remember us having a wide variation of times cos of traffic and mechanical problems with a heater hose splitting. Other than that I have, as usual, forgotten most of the details - old timers disease! :roll:
Only 1 solution - get back on track and re-time!:lol: :wink:
Dont they threaten to send you home if they catch you with timing gear? I thought it was strictly verboten cos it null and voids the insurance?

I've only just been able to get on NL for the first time since the track day, my computer wouldn;t let me get on :(
The track day was wicked had a great laugh, good to meet so many of you, only just got round to softening the suspension up tonight which has stopped me from jumpingout of my seat every time I hit a bump, cant wait till the next one, might have my stack dash in there by then so I'll hide my sensor and see what times I'm getting.

Just looked through an old post about the Ford National day last year and what times people were running, there is no way you were getting round the track that quick, nice to think and with timing gear you can only trust what you read but some of the cossys ie: Steve Scott 500bhp 4wd escort wrc was getting round there in 1 min 21, and I'm not joking I was there and to say he was eating the track up was a understatement,
According to our video footage we rana 1.31 best like yourself which is a very respectable time comparing it too the cosworths from the national day, can't wait for the next one now as I have a even better reason to break past 1min 30, I think thsi may prove how underated novas are really, shame we cant go out on the track with the cossys cos I reckon we could give them more hassle than you would think :) although there was only one on the day we were all there
yeah i am a bit pissed about the fact that my 'accurate ' timer didn't work, but next time i will make sure it's working fine. can you send me you video's? msm them to me, bencurry@ntlworld.com

oh i know a guy who think's you might know him?? his names Karl Clarck,he has had quite a few Rover's done up,such as his 220 turbo,kitted and a few others,he lives up here in the midlands now but use to live nr Cambridge..
