how can there be an explosion in space as it needs oxygen to burn?

its not burning that happens in space, the pressures an temperatures are that high that the atoms themselves break down into the particles that make them.
This is where all elements come from, the stars. The process that takes place inside the sun creates all the elements in the universe, which start out as hydrogen. So no they dont burn

That interesting stuff phil. Never understood how things could burn in space. Now i know they dont burn the atoms explode. Cheers

i could have explained it much much better but i really cant be bothered to sit here a write pages. Black holes are interesting, very interesting. I suggest you read into them as some of the things you wont be able to get your head round.

Phil do you have any links on that? I'm quite intrigued by it.

To understand black holes you really need to have a n understanding of general relativity.
Here are some links that you might find interesting
http://www.eclipse.net/~cmmiller/BH/blkbh.html
http://csep10.phys.utk.edu/guidry/violence/blackholes.html
http://www.damtp.cam.ac.uk/user/gr/public/bh_intro.html
You'll probably come away after reading it having more questions than before.

also while we are on the subject have a look at this site, it has some of the theories that steven hawkings has put forward. Again they make a good reading and some very strange things that have been suggested.

Interesting.

When I gave a lecture in Japan, I was asked not to mention the possible re-collapse of the universe, because it might affect the stock market.

lol, so how does that affect the stock market then

Stuart

on my HND the lecturer trying to teach us ASP could only speak very broken chinglish, but made up for lack of vocabulary diversity by screeching at volume... lol

lmao oh god when you also tell when she gets excited talk about these equations as she starts to shout an makes weird squeeking noise, its quite scary
