I agree - theyre naff and the "latest stick on accessory".

proper metal ones (like the ones you see in rally cars where its all stripped out) are okay - but I'm guessing yours aint stripped out.

Stick to proper mates - I prefer heavy duty rubber ones - 2 reasons. 1 they last 100 times longer and 2 if you tread in dog poo you can clean it off easier than matrerial ones which get all matted and stink for ever!
