Right what sort of jobs do people have after finishing their degree. Im starting to look around to see what sort of jobs are available as i only have a year left now. Just interested to see what everyone else is doing.
Im also doing a Astrophysics course if that helps.
If all goes to plan I'm joining the Navy as a Submarine Warfare Officer. In my last year of an IT course, need to start doing some work :?
Degrees are a waste of time for civi jobs unless it's vocational i.e. medical or vetinary. My tuppence anyway. If I don't get in the Navy I'll probably end up on a job I could have got out of 6th form

The jobs im sort of looking at i do need a degree and some sort experience.
Im looking being a scientist mainly to do with space as thats what i find most interesting.
I agree most degree are useless and a waste of time, i.e something like communication skills lol
space man?
your problem will be the experience bit. Employers do want degree educated people, but very few will want degree educated people with no experience. I had this problem, (although they wouldn't have even considered a non graduate). It is especially present in the science type jobs (chemistry, physics, computers etc)
Ps i am lying. I did an art (colouring in) degree and now am a chopped potato heating technician in my local McDonalds.
I agree most degree are useless and a waste of time, i.e something like communication skills lol
I did A-Level communication studies, and its actually come in very useful, especially in interviews and etc (chose it because its quite a general subject, as subjects such as Law or Physics for example are more job-specific). Although I did also touch on communications when I was doing my day release thing, and that really was basic stuff - but it was designed for chavs and school dropouts.... didn't stick on that course long
I had the option to continue my HND (CIT) for another year or two to make it a degree, but by that time I'd had enough and just wanted to earn some money. I'm now working as an IT Co-Ordinator for the MOD in Apache, yet my friend who did Business Studies HND and did do the extra year to gain the degree is still looking for work. However, I've been told it wasn't my quailfications that got me my current job, it was experience and aptitude (neither of which were particularly IT related).

When ive finished next year im not conitiuing any more, i want to be earning proper money ect...
Only thing is there are loads of teaching positions, lectures and PHd stuff which i dont want to be doing, the jobs i have found are quite hard to get hold of and i reckon they are gonna be very hard to get.
BEng Automotive Electronics Engineering, took 13 months to find a properly relevant job after uni.
i was a test engineer in a crappy electronics factory for 6 months, then went to germany for 3 months to fix humvees for the US arym then came back to the UK and tested catalyctic convertors for 3 months and then into this job which isnt far off the longest ammount of time that ive ever been in the same compay for lol Visteon, designing software for ECU's. currently doing the air mass meter correction design yay
degrees are usefull if your do a "proper" one (not like mine lol) and actually intend to use it, as opposed to art students!!!!!
phil youve got the right idea about looking NOW as opposed to when you graduate.
look on

in my final year now and have applied to loads of places and had a few interviews already, dont gradute till june and no job yet but still hopefull of something other than homebase (current part time work, lol)
doing computer science btw
lol

Have: LLB (Hons) Law
Do: I put anything into numerical and alphabetical order. And also use potoaTOE stamps. Under supervision. And if i get another degree, i may be promoted to a position where i get my own stapler and a box of paperclips. But that is still something i aspire to get, and isn't a realistically achievable goal at this moment in time.
Having a degree is better than not having a degree. However, having a GOOD degree is (obviously) far better than having one that's not worth the paper the certificate is printed on.
Most jobs that are not PROFESSIONS but that require degrees can also be obtained by actually working the job and doing on the job training, which can usually end up in a degree wualification too. This takes longer, but you are also obtaining experience, the degree, and earning money.
well im starting my degree at the end of the summer, after a bit of a break from 6th form.
i'm doing architecture, and have 3 jobs available to me when i finish, so it's worked out quite well really.....

Personally, i'd take a chance and knock on his door one night. You never know....

Well i want to sit on arse all night an look at the stars, i.e work in an observatory or any thing to do with space but there doesnt seem to much available. There are a few at the moment in the Antarctic for 3 years and one in sheffield which sounds good, i think im just going to have to spend some time looking at a few an find some more info out.
There is no way im gonna end up being a physics teacher, the ones that wear cartoon socks with very short trousers lol. That is a last resort
lol.. all the physics teachers at my school were really wierd...

Now am a trainee heating engineer (plumber) got my own van with diesel paid for and i get free lunch every day. There is some serious money to be made in this business. Doing a degree was a waste of time for me as i could have done what im doing now at 16!

Well i never knew what i wished to do once i left school,so i dosed for a year :P
Then got very bored of (a) my mum and dad going on at my every day
(b)and also not having any money..
So i when to college(lol the help with the money part)
Where i started on a b tech in IT (and also a A level in art, only cus i love art and im good at it) well i soon got very bored of the IT coruse, but loved the art and got an A* in it..
I guess you can say im just not a academic type,im more hands on,so i when out got my self a job(17,almost 18 at this point) working at a company doing air conditionnig, there i was doing on the job training to get a cirtificate for the electrical enginering side of it,i attained this(was not hard, lol)stayed there for a total of 1yr aprox..
Then once again i was bored, lol
So i though humm might go to work with my dad see what its like?
well buy the end of day two i was well into it,i just felt more my self doing carpentry and joinery,so affter six months i stated going to college on day release once a week, affter two years i attained a National Vocational Qualification from "NVQ" CIT city & guilds..
The two years of college wer the best times i have had in any education(the college was full of girls doing Equine studies(houres's to anyone who dose not know) and also small animal care,it was great they use to have summerball dance's and loads of graet night's on campus,im still in touch with most of the guys i when there with, and work along side one most day's,lol we are god mates now.
During the two years of traning money was crap, but affter it picked up,and became better, and now im self employed the money is amazing, but making sure you keep all you docs togeth for when the tax man wants it is anoying, lol and some times it's hard to keep your self in work, but when you are you make enough money to cover your low times..

just do what im planning on doing. becoming a full time student! just do course after course after course. its a free ride then. hehe
"free ride" lmao youve not investigatged it much then have you :p
Lmfao
The last 4 months of my uni course were the most stressful time of my life. You have so many deadlines to adhere to and to pass you have to work your ass off. Oh and there is also the pressure of "my whole life will be dictated by these exams" coming up.

Im getting rather stressed out at the moment, do much course exams and then there is the matter with my car its all pissing me off far too much. Working nights before exams doesnt help either but unlike most student im not a lazy fuck wit that free loads their way through life.
I cant see the fun in doing course after course, i'd rather being doing something constructive actually having a part in changing the world, not being a bum that no ones cares about an looks down on.
get a job you student to55er :p lol

   Current interest rates on the student loans are 2.6%. Also consider credit cards and overdraughts (which you will get being a 'long term student on course after course') plus a nice grad loan afterwards.
Add that lot up then add 'lost earnings' for the amount you would have earnt for the years at uni, then divide the total by the rest of your realistic working life and that's how many extra thousand per year, every year, you need to earn to stay level with someone who just went and got a job! Now call me a cynic but...

hey i plan on dying at uni. hehe then everyone in my corridor gets an automatic 2:1 i aint guna die yet tho. still many courses to go yet hehe.
i just dont recon ill live to be that old so might as well enjoy my time and get as much of a free ride as i can! hehe. i dont drink or do drugs so have plenty of money left for the term. i dont really need an overdraft or a creditcard.
will hopefully do about 5 courses after this one. then die in a tragic fluke accident involving an onion, 17 mice and a tractor. well you never know.

i just cant see the point in free loading all your life, you have no sense of achievement

Ass-Love with Jethro?
you wish.
i just recon i aint guna live very long! and will die in an obscure way.
i dont feel i need to achieve anything to be complete. once youve achieved something you can then either die happy or have to achieve something else. im happy to die weather ive achieved anything or not. im content in myself.
FREAK
what "course" are you doing now? and what level is it? (11+ lol)
