Reading a link from the www.max-boost.co.uk site (nice one camb!) :

"......vane type airflow meter, you are losing a substantial amount of power potential through its restriction.......... Engines fitted with this type of meter will usually gain at least 10% when changed to a large hot wire or speed/density type system......when the airflow flap bottoms out at high airflow rates, it is no longer capable of sending a proper signal to the ECU. "

What is a hot wire system? Are there any other vauxhalls that have efi but don't use the afm? (aside from 40's anb tb's)

any help appreciated,

the xe uses a hot wire type i think.

V6 has one (mine will be modified soon for minimal gains.

but i dont think you can just put a different afm in with the ecu.
some of the ecu is contained in the flap afm unit whereas the MAF sensor is jsut a bunch of wires.

the entire ecu is inside the AFM on jetronic models

the box on the bulkhead is for ignition only

to bypass it u could use a full engine loom and ecu from a C16SE, plus the sensors on the c16se that are different (might be easier just taking the entire c16se inlet manifold)

Right a proper mission!
Didn't realise the majority of the ECU was in the AFM!
Think I'd find it had trying to find a C16SE, let alone the inlet from one!

cheers for the help anyway!

mk3 astras have em

GLS 1.6 or Si 1.6 models have c16se same as nova ;)

engine loom is also independant which is quite handy ;)

Cheers, Might take a trip to scrappy then!
