Ok, has anybody got a link or advice on weather a cat would be legally required on an engine which was made after 1993?

The reason i ask, Is purly because my mate is about to build a VR6 Mk2 golf and people have given different versions.

I personally have read that the Cat goes with the engine, So if you say transplant a VR6 from a 1997 car into a 1990 car the cat is required as the engine was brought in after 1993. I've also heard that a cat is not 100% ness as long as the emission test is passed.

I've tried to find the info on the DVLA website but no luck as yet, So if anybody can cover this grey area. Esp those with newer engines from corsas and the like.

cheers. GT

from what I understand a cat isnt legelally needed if the car will pass the emisions, however passing the emisions without the cat is unlikly

so does that mean if u have a valver from a G reg then u wont need a cat but a valver from say an L reg will???
seems strange

The emmisions is testsed to the standards of the body shell or the engine using which ever is the oldest.
e.g. a 1989 car with a 2005 engine is tested using 1989 standards.
a 2005 car with a 1989 engine is also tested using 1989 standards.

FACT.

this is taken directly from the manual
Test according to which is older , engine or vehicle.

eg. A 1995 car fitted with a 1991 engine (of whatever make), test to 1991 standards for emission purposes.

Note: The onus is on the vehicle presenter to prove engine age

therefore if the engine originally had a cat, but the body shell is pre 1993, you dont need it.
