I have found a small bubble :o on my right front door that has been bugging me for ages. I have sanded off the bubble and the rust all around that caused it. I am now in the process of filling and i cant seem to get the filler level. Its not smooth, no matter how many times i re-fill and sand its not totally smooth!!
Can anyone give me some pointers so that I can get it right.
Thanks all.
how are you applying the filler and what grade paper are you using to sand it down?
how are you sanding it?
if you are simply using a peice of paper then your hands/fingers will automatically create a contour,
try using a sanding block.

I am useing a sanding block and 40 grade sandpaper I think. I have got it kind of smooth now, what i have done is got it as smooth as I could, then if there were any small holes I filled them with filler. If there is still holes today I will sand then do the same. :| . I have got so much to do on my car, it was going to the dog house but ive spent over a year of my free time restoreing her. it will be worth it in the end  ,
Cheers all.

try sanding with 80 grit - nicer finish than with 40, sometimes 40 can be a bit harsh

Your doing the right thing, just keep at it.
dont worry about little holes the primer will fill them just get it smooth by using a sanding block

to get it smooth, try wet sanding it, before you spray it.
i find it gets the area smoother than dry sanding

 Yer I have a sanding block now. I got the area very smooth and then primered it. After two coats of primer i smoothed the area, then the next day i applied the first coat of paint. It looks very rough :o , not a good finish. Slightly annoyed :x . I will see what it looks like after a few more coats....
Any idea,
Pete.
Your never going to get a mint finish with a can fella, U can however get an okish job done which would pass unnoticed, It depends where your spraying.
I take it you know how to spray etc?
Couple of rules when flatting, try not to jump more than to grades at a time, when wet flatting use a little bit of washing up liquid it helps to get the finish even smoother.
Personally, Depending on what i'm doing if i was flatting filler I'd use around 120's to bring it flat with the bodywork and then continue with 240's, 400's, 800's and finish off with 1200's the last few will need to be wet.

if it feels a bit rough and sand paper like, when you have applied a few layers of top coat wet sand it back with a very low grade wet+dry paper. then t-cut it and it should be fine mate

it is possible to get a mint finish with a spray can. i think where you have gone wrong is applying the colour coat when you did. one reason for using primer is to anable you to remove all pinholes, scratches etc. more coats of primer flatting off with 1200 grit wet n dry (wet) between coats would have sorted this. then when applying the colour this can be done the same way. after your final coat flat off using 1500 - 2000 grit wet n dry (wet) and blend in to surrounding areas.
once youve flatted the final coat with the fine wet n dry n its hardened properly then t-cut. do this with a damp cloth working the t-cut firmley in a circuler motion keep working the same spot till it appears to be drying, u will notice a high shine through the haze. allow to dry ( 30 seconds or so) then buff up the haze with a soft cloth n apply polish.
doing it this way can give a mirror finish

how many layers of clear coat should i put on? That is the bit that protects the paint is it not? :?
