I have 2 f13 g/box's, but they differ slightly. I'll be fitting one of them tommorrow but want to know which one.

The first one has a small 'f13' stamp near the selector and is a C374. It's come from a 1989 GTE. Obviously this means it's a close ratio box. It also has these numbers on it; 901 93516 and 0414796

The second box Has a large 'f13' stamp on it and is a W374. I don't know what car it's come from. I take it this means it's a wide ratio box? Would this have come off of a gte/gsi? I thought they were all close ratio from gte/gsi's?? It also has these numbers on it; 90 334 345 and 0081226

Can anyone shed any light on this? Is the second one even from a gte/gsi?? I think i'll be putting the C374 in as i want my acceleration to be as quick as possible. Is it possible the one i'm about to take out is a wide ratio? It's a 1990, H-plate gsi e16se

Any info appreciated

The wide is probably from a 1.6 carb cav or something like that!

i got an F13 WR 3.74 that came with GTE engine.

Check your gearbox in ur GSI (jack it up). If you want more acceleration then use the CR.

I'm hoping that the box in my gsi is a WR 3.74, so i can fit the CR and get more acceleration :D I'll find out tommorrow i guess. Just thought it was odd they were different that's all. Why would they fit a WR to a gte in the first place?

I could swear that gte's came with close rato's as standard!

exactly what i thought.

But when i looked i expected to see C3.74, but found W3.74.

Now i'm going to get a 4.53FD to go in it. Lots of acceleration while keeping a healthy cruise/top speed

acceleration still won't be great with that, the problem is the gear ratios are too far apart so you get a big flat spot changing from 3rd to 4th

Right, well i'm now very wet and cold and have been out in the sheeeiite weather for afew hours now, but i'm at the stage of taking the old box out. I've had a look and its a C394 in there at the mo :( Never mind.

So snowface are you using the wide ratio box? What are the benefits of using a wide ratio box?

I'll be fitting the new box+clutch+starter tommorrow as i can't be arsed anymore. Does anyone know what the weather will be like tommorrow? Better not be fucking raining like it was ALL day today

With a WR setup if i change at 6000rpm in 3rd it will drop me back to 4100rpm in 4th. not too bad as this is where the power band is.

with an CR changing at 6k in 3rd will drop back to 4500rpm so only 400rpm different.

So is the only difference between a CR and WR box between 3rd and 4th gear? Think i'll stick with the CR box. If it drops back to 4100rpm rather than 4500rpm surely it'd actually slow you down abit because your max bhp will be at 5800'ish?

hi sorry dunova, i was replying to benji's post, didn' see urs.

a basically a WR box's 4th gear is the same as a CR 5th gear.

So in a WR your 5th gear is going to be a good gear to cruise at.

e.g. motorway driving on a CR394 sitting at 4000rpm in 5th you will only doing 75mph.

using the WR394 sitting at 4000rpm in 5th you would be doing 95mph.

the CR gears are bunched together more so you have to change gear more and keep the rev's higher up the range. and Vica-versa for WR.

If you want acceleration then go for CR, if you want nice speed with lowish rpm's then use WR.

using a higher FD will improve acceleration on both boxes.

using a higher FD will improve acceleration on both boxes.

Sorry i know nothing about gearbox's, but how could having a higher final drive give you better acceleration? So if i got a 4.18 final drive i would have better acceleration? What box can i get one from?
