ok i currently have an F15WR box with a crazy long 355 final drive

ive experimented with the gearbox graph spreadsheet i made and have finally decided i want a WR box with 418FD

this means i get a 1st-3rd similar to the original nova GTE box (CR374) and 4th and 5th are spread out a bit more (5th will attain 145-150ish rather than the 135 of the gte box) which is good for me as i do a lot of motorway miles

now my current box is quite notchy, grinds a bit going into gears at high rpms etc so i'd be loath to simply stick a 418 in it unless i fixed these problems, with it being a 1600 i'd need a F13 or F15 so i cant just find and buy a F10WR418 and an F13WR418 doesnt exist as far as i can tell

now i'd rather fix my box if it was easy enough than spend time and money finding another f13wr and a box with a 418fd fitting the 418fd and finding the box ive baught is fucked....

so how easy would it be to fix these problems? and/or how easy is it to SPOT the problems on another box by looking at the cluster etc?

If the gearbox grinds between certain gears and not all then I would guess that you would need new synchromesh cones. This I woudn't have said was an easy DIY job. I think you would need a special puller to get the gears out of the box.

However if this is not the case and its with every gear then it could be a problem with either the clutch (adjustment) or some feature of the engine moving under load.

I guess your first job is to find out what the problem actually is. Then you will know if its something you can manage yourself or not.

hey, i'm thinling along the same lines aragorn

I got an F10 WR 5-speed with 3.94FD in my current 1.3.

My 1.6 Gearbox is an F13 WR 3.74FD.

Now i want to get a 4.18FD to go int th F13 to give me better acceleration, and also good top end.

I've got a 3.94 in my 1.3 but i'll go to scrappy's soon and get a 4.18 off a 1.0/1.2i as there should be plenty about.

i'm only quoting mr haynes so i can't say for certain. it makes sense though for the lower powered Nova's to have higher fd's so i'll check it out.

don't belive what haynes say's. go o the scrappers with a wire brush and find all the gearbox numbers you can i'm sure you'll find what your looking for. look on nova's astra's and cav's.

what you need is a f13 casing, this will fit over the large 1600 flywheel and clutch.

then you need a CR gear cluster, this can be from a f10 or a f13 they are the interchangable.

with this you need to used the crown wheel and pinion from f10 or a f13, again they are interchangable but you need to get the right ratio. i.e. 4.18

the f15 cannot be mixed with the f10/f13. i tried and it didn't work.

been to scrappy today, found 2 x W418's. Both on mk3 Astra's (one F10, one F13). Only snag was i didn't bring a pair of mole grips with as i couldn't get the crown nut off the bottom joint on the hub lol.

An 18mm spanner would fit if i had one, tried an 11/16 which is v.close and it just slipped a bit.

they want ?50 for a gearbox so i'm gonna ring Vaux on Monday see what one is new, can't be much more than ?50 (less hassle).

mk3 astras have 418's?

that could be useful to know

just need to readjust me clutch cable to see if its just the clutch or if its the actual box thats causing the probs
