My mechanic wont fit it because the pulley covers wont fit over it. He also says that if i leave the covers off that i'm running a good risk of damaging my timing belt and maybe snapping it. Is he right?

leave the covers off. lots of people go without. esp rally cars!

He reckons that even a little stone'd displace the belt and leave my newly built engine all bent and worthless, is he right?

Its personal preference, i have covered over 40k with my engine now from fast b road driving cross country to track day and pod days. never had a problem with no covers

however he is correct in that if a stone was to find its way into the belt area and get picked up by the belt you'd end up with a mess

you could use a jigsaw to cut a circle out of the cover that lines up with the vernier, this way the extra depth sticks thru the cover so u get the belt protection and can show off the vernier too
