there i was at my local meet on a wednesday nite minding my own not causing anyone any harm, and i choose to leave at about 10pm coz i was bloody cold, i get jst out of the car-park and the old rozzers pull me over with some VOSA guys(mot testers) and decide to do a spot check, nothing wrong with the car itself apart from the windows, the stupid annoying wanker has given me 10 days to remove the tint or be taken to court,
I've had the car 5 days and already i have to do a mod i don't want to do.
Why don't the rozzers go and do some proper work  instead of pulling over innocent ppl like me???
sorry for the moan but it has really pissed me off.

Yeah they can be funny about anything mate, They dont want people meeting or cruising etc, they would love to kill the scene.

But are your windows limo tints though? Lol. & If it was night how Can they tell how dark they are??

Just nip down the scrappy & buy some windows cheap. change the glass, & get your producer stamped by a local garage to say its been done & then go back to police station n its all cleared up & Done with.

Its good to have spare glass anyway, Coz when they pull you again, you do the same.

Or if you got some mates down the garage they will just stamp it anyway! Lol. I had that problem before on a car. Bloody tints!

Any tint other than manufacture is now illegal on front windows so you're not innocent! Don't like it.. don't break the law!

They were actually within there rights to make you remove the film there and then. They did this with quite a few spot checks in the summer in MK.

Isnt that before a certain time the car was manufactured. I heard there was a window tinting law that came in after 92 or something!?
Basically meaning any cars before then could have limo tints and they cant say anything.

Any tint on the front windows is now illegal, like Breeny says, apart from the original manufacturers ones

I agree Phil, Ive got the bucket seats & harnesses & they tried telling me they shouldnt be on a road car etc.
When there safer then the standard seat belts! Ive even declared the car as a 2 seater as because I had no rear seats the car was not MOT'd correctly they told me.
Even though at the time I had the rear seat belts still there! (Id just stripped the seats out to see if there was a difference)

Next they will probably tell me 16v brakes are illegal for a 1.4!

All depends on the officers discression. They all have a job to do & most do it properly, But modified cars will always be pulled for something. Theres a copper round my area who has an astra 888! Think they have bucket seats!?? N thats a road car.

What did u do about your window tints Phil? Did you have to change em?

Define "front windows". I always thought tints on windscreen were illegal, front sides >30 or 35% tint, can't remember which (bear in mind some novas like SR etc already have slight tint), and rear quarters and windows can be anything.

Oh well, looks like the kid who bought my hatch is gonna have more trouble

Dave, did they use a proper light measuring tool to measure the density of tint?

Any tint at all now on front windows apart from proper factory tinted glass is illegal. We have a professional tinter who comes and he always does the front on an understanding that thet could be ripped out at any time

Thats a real pain in the ar*e. Some cars would look stupid with only the rears tinted. Subaru can pass it off because there side windows are slightly factory tinted, But on my car it would look pants. Ive been lucky about tints round here, The police have pulled me a few times but never commented on the tints. Its always been the rear lights (Pink bulbs!?) or something trivial.

they cannot make you remove them there and then unless they can prove uve had them done after the law was introduced (so if u get caught twice for instance and the first time stuck some normal glass in for the test and put the tints back in) however i'd also say it would be dangerous to remove tints without the proper facilities - simply peeling them off would leave horrible residue behind which would make it very difficult to see out the window which would be dangerous, the glass would need cleaned with some kinda solvent to remove the glue

there is a provision in the law which states that if the vehicle had tinting film applied before the law came into effect they can only issue a 10 day notice to remove them and then take the car for inspection

im going to look into getting some actual tinted glass for mine, must be able to get some front windows made to the legal limit - you see mercs n bmw's all the time with dark tints on the front and its the glass not film!

Indeed... the gack left behind is very hard to remove.

yeh they gave me the option of removing the tints there and then but i say i'm not gonna do that so they got the light test kit out and did the density test and it failed at which point they gave the 10 days to get it done otherwise i could face going to court.

I would like to make a point that i did buy the car not knowing that the tints were illegal, and that i quite like the look of tints so as much as everyone having their own opinion is important i don't appriciate people slagging tints off and telling me like i'm automattically gonna know the tints are illegal.

Thanx to everyone who has posted.

The Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) has started a blitz on drivers who have illegally tinted windows. The crackdown follows concerns that have been raised over the number of vehicles being driven with heavily tinted windscreens and front side windows. Many drivers do not realise that their vision is significantly impaired when looking through tinted glass and are often unaware that heavy tinted glass is illegal.

VOSA are now stopping vehicles with tinted windows and checking them for opacity using specialised equipment. If the windows are found to be over the legal tint limit the vehicle will be prohibited and cannot be driven until the tint is removed.

Motorists who do not rectify the problem will be prosecuted.

Yes they can make you remove the film.. a law is a law, they get changed on a daily basis without joe public knowing..

The law depends on age of the vehicle... pre 85 you can tint them upto 70% VLT, after 85, its 75% VLT. Don't be fooled though... both of them are equivalent to a factory option.

The VOSA people actually turned upto Milton Keynes last summer as already said, they set up a mobile MOT station, they must have made at least 50 people over a few weekends remove there window tint, they gave a friend of mine a VOSA notice thingy to get his windows changed as he had the proper Bmw tinted glass on his brand spanking new E46 325D.
