Righ, where do i start...

I have a moderatly bad fueling problem.... It's runnig rich, and going more petrol than it should. everything like Headgasket e.t.c is fine.

if you plant your foot, in low revs of any gear, the car makes a juddering motion, and you can here the engine kind of die for a split second, untill it suddenly picks up. you have to rev it more than normal to set of in 1st, 2nd, as otherwise the engine seems to underpower alot.

i've had a quick look with the filter off, and by pulling the throttle, the jet of fuel squirting into the carb is quite spluttery and irregular, leading me to believe it's maybe a problem starting with the Fuel pump ? does that sound about right..

Secondly,it's not ideling properly (a bit of choke all the time really), there is alot of Slack in the throttle cable, and it's pretty stiff, plus i think the carb needs stripping and setting up from scratch.

I also know the Alternator belt needs replacing, and the timing checking/ a new camb belt probably.

my mum uses my car, and i've been putting up with it till the new engine is done, but she said she'l pay for it to be fixed at a garage  as really i have no time at all to fix it myself at the mo..

So i thought i'd run it by some more knowlegable people, as i think that's the source of the problem ? Any other possible causes for the problem , factors that i havn't mentioned ?

Cheers nick

sounds like the idle mixture is too rich and when progressing from idle to main jets its bogging down cos of overfuelling

what carb is it? might need to invest in a pressure regulator. i did even though it was on a 1.4 carb engine. sorted all my problems!

Right, cheers aragorn, but that wouldn't solve the problem of the very irregular and spluttery fuel jet that's injected into the carb.

it's only spluttery and irregular through the first bit of travel of the throttle cable. Once the throttle cable is pushed harder (opened more) the jet is a lot stronger and Solid - hence leading me to believe this may be part of the problem.

As i have no time at all to strip and carb, and i wouldn't like to set it up myself properly, i'l tell the garage about the Main/idle jet idea when i drop it off.

The engine has never ever had a part replaced (except for the gearbox -my fault) so i think it's about time the carb is stripped and cleaned e.t.c just to prolong it's life.

Also, the Distributor is Clattering badly. and it sounds like the balancing weights are off ? this means a new dizzy i presume ?

Cheers nick

cant see it being anything to do with the fuel pump, possible need the carb jets replacing, try altering ur timing that might make a difference

there could be a definate possibilty that the jets are either blocked or faulty, and the acclerator pump may be faulty. i the same thing happend on a solex carb on a polo i had once.

take all the jets out and carfully blast em off with an air pipe, and then take it to a tuning center to set up the emissions, also the timming could be out if it under powerd, it may need advancing

K cheers, i'l look it at meself, see what i've got time to do before it goes to be set-up, done e.t.c
