If money was no object, what Vauxhall engine would you fit in your Nova and why?

I just want a simple response and no arguments about someone elses choices..

top spec 2.0 16v, tb's, steel crank and rod's, forged piston's, major head work(touring car style) crazy cam's. alloy block to keep weight down no problem's that you get with the standard xe's weight,

or for total daftness(is that a word?) rear engined 3.0 v6 supercharged

well seeing as an all alloy block for the c20xe is now available, i would go down that route, or a very high spec c16xe 8)

A turbo :D

probably under 2.0 maybe 1.8 or 1.6 and get it turbo'd

i'd but the 5.7 V8 out the monaro in a nova

id have big berthas engine ;o)

m.d.
23-01-05, 12:06 PM
c20xe like benji said,

but id have it using the cally 4x4 running gear too. now that would be a force to be reconed with

i would have the frontera 2.2 diesel imagine the torque on that brummmmm

kevster
23-01-05, 12:21 PM
i think i would have to have a 2.0L 16v

Jim
23-01-05, 12:26 PM
I'd like Rick's engine, just to experience the stupidity of it, lol.

Either that or a 1.6 16v on TB's or 1.6 Turbo.

Jim

i'd but the 5.7 V8 out the monaro in a nova

the new version is said to have a 6.0ltr version

C20LET, or C20XE running TB's, as benji mentioned.

if money was no object i wouldnt buy a shite vauxhall in the first place to waste the money on

NovaNeil
23-01-05, 04:29 PM
I'd have a 260-300bhp 1.6 16v Turbo..... Simply because a)Turbo's Rule  and b) To keep the weight down, so not to upset the handling too much.

Could you imagine a well setup 280bhp 1.6 16v Turbo, in a stripped out Nova, with some trick suspension, brakes, cage etc.... WOW! It would be an absolute TRACK WEAPON!

Neil

nova---chris
23-01-05, 07:13 PM
Well i suppose it would be a 1600 16v turbo.
Highly specced. Something simlar to velos test engines they did.

On the other hand being non vaux i wouldnt mind attempting a seat leon turbo engine. 18 20v turbo specced to fuck!! Yum
A future project maybe!!

23-01-05, 07:51 PM
just changed my mind. id just turn the engine 90degrees and make it rear wheel drive. then using the cozzie 4x4 running gear as its stronger than the cally stuff.

then just use a vaux c20let with about 600 bhp. think thats the most ever obtained from one so far anyway

raza
23-01-05, 09:29 PM
Same here have it rear wheel drive . Somthing like a 2 litre turbo or as big as i could fit under the bonnet .. Keep the car looking standard from the out side . Pull up next to some idiot in a nice car and race them and leave them eating my dust :) .. i can but dream :(

Just wanted to see what the general thoughts of the NL users were. It seems that the LET and 2.0XE are still the most desirable lumps despite the constant increase of very fast small block motors.

I wonder if we should organise a group track day, somewhere reasonably priced like donnington to see once and for all how big a difference the big block makes?

My desires are reasonaly humble, I would choose to have a 16xe tuned like CP's. More important to me is having a well sorted chassis.

My other option would be an engine like Jim's or a well sorted 16SE on the original inlet manifold.

Surely there must be more people with ambitions and dreams to share?

i would go for the C20LET running about 350bhp with four wheeldrive!! imagine launching that from the lights against a tasty 400bhp evo.........see ya mate

alloy block 20xe to a high spec

MC
24-01-05, 10:53 AM
Tell me more about the alloy xe block?

i think QED supply one at about ?3.5K lol there is a pic on mig from the asport show.

It'd have to be 2 high specced 1.6 16v turbo, one in front and one in back, this should be beetter for handling (than 2 XE/LET engines) but still keep very decent speeds! That should be good for 400ish bhp and AWD!

Id have ade's (issac hunt) Engine rapid as fuck and 1/4 mile in 11.3 seconds...luvvly jubbly 8)

Well if money were no object 1 car wouldnt be enough. You would actually need 3 maybe 4. Each 1 would have to be no compromise for its specific use else why bother throwing major money at something thats always going to be fundamentally flawed?

1. Track use. latest 2.0 with full race engineered spec from someone like Swindon developments. Most of the money would go on developing a full on race chassis and suspension set up along with sequential transmission rear wheel drive etc. In reality about the only standard thing retained would be the shape!
2. Quarter mile use. Again total re-build from the ground up using the Monaro V8 and going to town on it so it could run on nitro etc. rear wheel drive and large slicks
3. Rallying. 1.6 on TB's heavily developed anyone see the junior WRC at the monte carlo rally? What a sound
4. Road only use 1.6 8v on forties similar to dans car

I've not included a LET anywhere cos IMO its fundamentally flawed. Looking at the power that can be got reliably out of Ford, Mitsu and others 2lt turbos the LET is left trailing - no offence to any LET fans

Lotus Carlton Engine RWD.

I suppose someones going to point out its not a Vauxhall Engine.

In that case I'd use a Z20 LET be the first one ever.

Barn
24-01-05, 08:07 PM
a nice 1600 16V with about ?10k spent on it...200+ bhp N/A

that'd do me

benji
24-01-05, 11:24 PM
My desires are reasonaly humble,

if we are being more realistic, then a 130bhp 1.4 8v would be nice.

not too unattainable, and with a well sorted suspention set-up it would go well.

Any thoughts on a Seat 1.8L 20V Turbo lump?
I think these are quite good engines. Not had time to look into them yet. but know a few people local run very good power with them!

Just a thought. But its not vaux

benji
25-01-05, 12:09 AM
it's the same engine that's in the golf, audi, (skoda?) very tuneable. very good engines. i have a tuning guide for this engine some where, if you want it i can scan it for you.

any thoughts on that pug?

I would like to see a supercharged small block engine, 1.6 8v perhaps?

A few friends have G40's which IRC are 1.3 supercharged? They are running about 180hp, awesome stuff :D

I'd also like to see a Z20Let with an ally block as suggested for the XE

Aragorn
25-01-05, 10:23 AM
i guess u could use the XE alloy block with C20LET (or other low comp) pistons and you'd have yourself a aly block c20let as the xe and let blocks and heads are the same

Breeny
25-01-05, 10:25 AM
Yes I know they are the same blocks, I did actually say Z20Let!

NickWalliams
25-01-05, 11:03 AM
I'd have a nice 2.0 16v Turbo lump running as much bhp as possible and I would have to have a nifty lookin laptop to control everything, Also would want superb handling and 4 wheel drive or something!

Maybe a shell made of alluminium with carbon fibre doors, wings etc

Breeny
25-01-05, 01:30 PM
^^^ You watch the fast and furious far too much

Supercharged Let.. hmmm now thats given me ideas!

NovaNickHead
25-01-05, 02:00 PM
i would prob have the same as the nova in max power ages ago with 2 LET engines in it 3.5 etc... running 696bhp plus nitros....

or throttle bodies on my xe engine depnds whether i wanted an interior or not!!

i've been looking into this alot recentley. supercharged 1400 8v

ANDYRACER
25-01-05, 10:59 PM
Has any1 ever supercharged a nova coz i had this idea a while a go and was thinking of supercharging my 2.0 8 valve all that torque and having the supercharge kick in and start whinning :D

Nick
25-01-05, 11:05 PM
or go lancia delta S4 stylee and have both a supercharger and a turbo.

the benefits speak for themselves.

Supercharger boosting you in low revs, turbo kicks in in higher revs.

Altough, it's probably very impossible.

25-01-05, 11:31 PM
I would love an S4 8)

26-01-05, 06:09 PM
money no object - might as well tune 1.2 or something... its only because of money that these lumps arent normally worth tuning.. 1.2 8 v with all 1.4, 1.6 bits on (whatever fits) bored out, compression, strengthening, little turbo intercooler etc etc throttles - remember that sleeved down 1.2 or 1.4 to a 1.0 turbo hillclimber in retro cars - did summat like 140bhp on rollers?? cudn't see why 130-150 bhp not possible out of 1.2...? lol. no one wud touch ya in cc classed 1/4 mile runs, not on four wheels anyway. sweet as. then u can keep ur 1.2 badge on the boot.

NovaNeil

20v 1.8 Audi/Seat/VW engine!!! Yes Chris... im with you on that one.... Fairly Light weight (Aluminium Block and head), very tunable and Turbo charged :D

The company that I used to do my DTA Turbo conversion specialised in that Engine conversion..... they put it in all sorts Mk1 & 2 Golfs, Lupos, Corrado's etc etc. They simpley run them standard on DTA most of the time and they constantly see a very reliable 280bhp.....

There demo Corrado had just a few mods internally... forged pistons, Rods, DTA and a massive Turbo from the states! It was estimated at 450bhp, but keep jumping out the rollers at 350bhp... so they could never map the very top end on there RR... Anyway, it went up Santa Pod (one of the first RWYB) this year and the guy driving got a bit carried away..... He blew it up 2/3 of the way down the strip and rolled over the line at 90mph with a 13.9!!!! MAD! Its now being rebuilt for 600bhp! Did anyone see it? it was Dark green on 17's.

Yes neil these things can be made rapid.
We struggled to keep with a leon i think it was last year.
He pulled up and we went in behind and just about clung to is coat tail.

Im really hoping i can source one of these engines soon so i can look into a few things. Be intresing what comes out of it.

I remember seeing a Seat Ibiza Turbo Diesel on 18"s doing a 3.8 0-60 @ Trax 03

1.6 16v FULL SPEC putting out around 260+bhp and revving to nearly 10,000rpm :D imagine the noise :o
if anyone wants to donate money i've got the nova with the base engine we could make this a reality

id do something thats never been done before.
or a bike engine for pure lightweight speed - heard suzuki are toying with the idea of making a few prototypes as proper production cars - but course thats just rumours.

2.2 5 cylinder out of an old Audi 100 Quattro Turbo?
but then i am a bit audi biased!

i reckon anythin heavier than a 2.0 16v would have to go in the back.

chris
