How do u flush your boot with out the pannel?

hello people, i was woundering how to smooth my boot with out the pannel i was going to just filler it in but i wouldnt know how to open it?

youll have to fit a pop solonoid, wired to a button on the dash. It took me less than an hour to do all the wiring and fitting, abit longer to do the welding and filling however.

lots of people on ebay sell boot poppers for less than ?15

or just get a boot release solenoid and switch out of a mk5 or mk6 escort and wire it in yourself like i did :lol:

just a quick note u wana weld metal over the recess. cos if u just filler it the filler will get hot and will sink back into the recess and then it will look shite

This is more or less the process I went through (may miss some points, I'm doing this from memory)

1) Buy a pop solenoid, with all the wiring, button etc Check it works with your car battery.

2) Remove the lock and handle from your boot, you should be left with 4 small holes and one large one from the lock.

3) Weld plates over each of the holes from the inside (or just the large one if your lazy...dont be tempted though) Weld it well, you don't want some chav knocking it back and opening it from the inside.

4) Attached the solenoid to your boot panel and to the boot release.

5) Fit button to your location of choice, make sure it looks neat and you have easy access to the rear to do the wiring.

6) Wire the soloid to the button, make sure no wires are visable

7) Check all is in working order

8) Begin using filler or fiberglass on each hole

9) Once finished, sand down, and spray

10) Due to wiring problems etc, you may need to fit a small rubber washer around the boot 'piston' (some of my friends have had problems with it not opening all the way, this will give it abit more of a outward thrust when popped)


Think thats all, you may wish to control it with an alarm remote, but this just requires slightly different wiring

don't just use filler to flush the tailgate, it would probably crack or fall out and you would never be able to get it smooth

cut and shape a plate to the size of the recess then weld it in, then just grind the welds down and fill it smooth, then get it sprayed up, fit a solenoid and jobs a good'un. :D

Dont filler it mate, Biggest mistake you could make,I done that to my mk one, it had a decent install nothing too much, But when you drive fast & The car vibrates slightly & your sounds are on, That lovely flat boot will crack & crumble. You will be able to see the outline of where the number plate panel is.

Not good!

The panel is well easy to get hold of & takes minimal amount of garage welding etc, Its smarter & lighter in weight too. You dont want to shut the boot hard & The boot section crumble onto the floor.

Buy the panel off ebay cheap enough, Failing that you may be able to get a boot already welded.

DO WHAT I DID WHEN YOV SMOOTHED IT OFF GET A CAV-OR SIMULAR SIZE BOOT RAM. AN TAKE YOUR WIPER OUT SMOOTH THAT AN USE THE REAR WIPER BUTTON TO OPEN THE BOOT. TRUST ME ITS THE BEST WAY AN COSTS NOTHIN.

What ill do is ill Get a Pro Welder to come out back of mine and do it for me Im too lazy :P then i got to buy the Solinoud :cry: About ?15 on Ebay i shlould of though Not too much ill go to Scrap yard and Rob one off a Mk 5/6 Escort or my brohers mates one :lol: see if he notices Lol Ty for the Replys :)

all solenoids are pretty much the same, so it wont matter which one you use, a boot one, one from a boot poppiung kit or central locking one.

I thought the boot ones were (supposed to be) stronger than door ones? Only real advantage of getting one over a proper kit is its cheaper.

i have standard c/l ones which pop my doors open. These have been fine without any problems even after 2 years, and i drive my car daily. They should deffo be ok on a boot as the release mechanism is no stiffer than a door release, and also consider the fact that the boot is not opened as often as the drivers side door.
