View Full Version : CV Joint
Right boy's and girl's,
my CV joint is on its last legs, even when you turn the wheel alittle it clicks like mad, so my question is how hard is it to do? and, are there any tools i would need apart from the normal?
thanks in advance, Nam

u need to loosen the hub off, ie the balljoint and anti roll bar so u can pull the hub out. Undo the hub nut and pull on the hub until the shaft falls out the other side (easier with 2 people)
Pull the shaft out of the gearbox and then pull back the cv boot, u need to find the circlip and use circlip pliers to hold it open, get 2 people, 1 to pull the cv while the other holds the pliers and the shaft and it will come off, fitting is reverse
Special tools would be the circlip pliers, although these arent essential. You are suppost to use a new hub nut aswell, but that isnt neccesary either. The only other thing is the bolts holding on the ball joint may be tight as hell, so ull need to improvise with that unless u have air tools
cheers for the fast reply mate, sounds like a biggish job to me :| i might see how much all teh parts will cost me and how much it will cost at a garage or somthing.
cheers Nam

new shafts are about ?60-70, single cv's are about 20-30
might be easier just getting a enw shaft
i did an outer boot and within a month the inner had gone and destroyed itself
as liam gte said u need circlip pliers - dont try it without them, you'll give yourself a headache
if u want it easy get another shaft from scrappy or new and just swap the shafts over

CV joint aint that hard to do mate, took me just over an hour. Just remove the shock(2 Bolts). Then loosen the wheel nut, will take some doing. Then pull back the cv boot back and i used a widehead screwdriver to get the circlip out. Then just shove a new cv joint in. Easy if you know your way round a car.
if i were you id do it without taking the shaft out of the gearbox cos then you gotta fook about topping that back up which can be a pain in the ass

its not that hard if you have the tools
i borrowed a original GM drive shaft removal tool (a-la-haynes manual pics) and it was crap. (the massive person sized spanner thing lol)
althought, i didn't really know what i was doing back then lol.
