View Full Version : Can i tint my headlamps !?
this may sound a stupid question... but i want to make the glass of my headlamps "whiter", as the colour of my car goes well with light/gey or Satin silver.
So i've got clear indicators, satin silver wheels e.t.c and the other day when it snowed my headlamps got covered if frost, making them look white.
heres a pic of what i mean

i Presume it's illegal to tint your headlamps ?
probably illegal. Everything is illegal. Soon wont be able to fart in public.
I'd say No. Not a good idea.

afaik for the mot headlights must show the correct colour light an be at the right angle but don't know if there is any law about tinting them,
i imagine if they were a different colour the local plod may have sommant to say about it but if they work without dimming the light produced nothing to stop you going for it
but personally i wouldn't just keep them clean an they'll be ok!

well you can get smoked headlights for a corsa!
they pass a mot!
yer, i don't wanna do them a funny colour...
i just wanna make them a bit misty looking, like the pic. I think it helps with the smoothness of the car.
has anyone ever seen this done before !?

iirc the corsa tinted headlights have the chrome bits inside the lamp tinted and not the glass, you could always get a pair of lamps from a scrappys and try painting the inside white, at least this way its not goin to affect the beam as it passes through the glass?........ just a thought i was goin to try and do mine red

MOT states that the "Correct colour" is white or yellow:
d. if intended to be one of a matched
pair
. emits light of substantially the same colour as its counterpart
. is the same size
. is correctly positioned
Note: In a four-headlamp system
the outer pair of headlamps need not
emit the same colour light as the
inner pair.
Note: The measurement of the
precise position of headlamps is not
part of the inspection, but check
visually that the lamps are at about
- the same height, and
- the same distance inboard from the side of the vehicle
e. is of the correct colour either white or yellow.
... however my hatch has got through an MOT fine with some very blue headlamp bulbs.
(edit)Also... the effect Nick talks about looks a lot like the half frosted rears on the new Astra Mk5
