right am after a power inverter for my dreamcast

i took it as
power=voltage x current

so therefore power=240x0.27(current rating on the back of my dreamcast)

so power = 64.8 watts
if what i have done is correct then a 100w power inverter should be sufficient
am i right ?

You will be fine with it Epo. Most of the invertors have a overload cut off anyway mate

no mate thats wrong it wont power the dreamcast, u have to to look ate the bottom of ur dreamcast and it will tell u the current input my PS2 is 220-240volts so i would need to get a 250volt power inverter or a 300watt, so have a look on ur dreamcast and it will tell u

the dreamcast voltage will be regulated down to CMOS voltage anyway, just like a PC, not much power at all

so the 100w power inverter will be sound then

take a lesson from me

just plug it in, if it works, bonus!

if it dont, have another play!

epo, i'l work it out for you, you may have to bear with me for a day or two !

Chris

CMOS voltage isn't a set voltage, it's different for a few chips. mainly a couple of the logic ones if i remember correctly.

as i said, i'm on the case epo.

nice one ta

just dont wanna waste me money under powering it

well i worked my PS2 + Xbox out as being roughly 125w

so, your calculations seem a little low... , but i can't see where you'd have gone wrong.

Also, if you can, make sure you buy an inverter than runs on a True Sine Wave system, rather than a Modified Sine Wave System. As it'l help reduce any performance/interferance issues that may encour.

Typically they are only 85% efficient, so expect to encounter some sufficient energy loss.

Go down to an electrical shop and ask to buy one, they should beable to give you advice on it, I'd say a 150w inverter tho....

if you x your 64.8w by root2 it comes out as something nearer to my calculations..

maybe you've used some RMS figure, i'l have a play with the calculations, see if i can work it out.

i know for sure a laptop computer is 70-90watts.

i just went on the current rating on the plate on the underside of the dream cast

you could be right..

i just can't see a reason as to why it would be nearly half that of an X-box/PS2

prob because dreamcasts are only cd-r and not dvd media so not needing as much power for the lens

Nick

All the lens does is Simply shine a laser on the disk, and if the light reflets (shiny part on the cd) it'l pick it up as a 1, if not it'l pick it up as a o = a binary number, this numbers is put through a DAC and it comes out as a voltage (a very simple explanation)

if you look at a cd under a microscope it's got thousands of lines of holes/no holes depending on the binary number that's burnt into the silvery foil.

i'm no expert but i can't see why the lens needs more power to read a DVD than a CD-R

i'll have a look what mine is when i get in it runs my ps2 well an is quite compact and quiet aswell was one i got out of a1 motorist centre.

right the one in mine that powers my ps2 is a vrx 300 inverter
afaik was about ?25
gives an out put of
230v, 50hz, 300w
hope that helps

epo

ok lets say i get a 300w inverter and my dreamcast only requires 100w
will this 300w inverter burn it out :?

Dave
30-12-04, 09:43 PM
the ps2 says 220-240v 50/60hz 50w an it runs it without problem
should imagine it would only draw what it needs from it but ask bloke in shop when you buy it but...DON'T GO TO HALFORDS*!

* sorry to anyone who works in halfords but my local 2 shops are filled with monkeys

i was gonna buy mine off ebay tbh

phone up a good ice company, get all the info you need then just buy one off the ebay job done

nice one ta dave and everybody else

how you gonna be running it?
if you're pulling power from the main battery may be a good idea to get a upgrade (sommant like diesel alt + battery) for better charge so you don't drain battery too much so you can't start car! or just run car when using it,
i cheated an have got all my ice running off second battery in boot with split charger

ive already got the td battery mate just need the alternater

might have to rob it of chris's car

yes, as said it wont fry your dreamcast.

the dream cast only draws as much current as it needs to, therefor through the calculations it only uses as much power as it needs to. as the power is dependant on the voltage (which is set at 230'ish) and current

i'd say it's better to get an inverter that gives you a bit too much, than a bit less. for obvious reasons lol.

what size inverter would i need to get for a ps2?

but i can't see why the lens needs more power to read a DVD than a CD-R

Would it not be that the DVD is encoded, so it will need more power for the processing to decode the data?

Chris

Nick

but a CD is encoded, you just use DAC (digital to anolgue convertor) and ADC (anoluge to ditigal convertor) to decode/encode the singal.

the DVD would certainly need some addition components, as if it didn't then you could simply modify CD drives to read DVD's.

but, the components in question usually are based on logic chips which only run on 5v and miniscule current.

you could well be right tho, i'l find out about that one
