View Full Version : RR Result
Went down to Wilshires at Wimpole today where the car was set up by Peter Baldwin who has many years experience racing and tuning cars. The RR supplied BHP figures, but unfortunatley no torque figures. RR figures vary throughout the country. I know of several people who have used this rolling road and agree that they provide fair readings.
There was me, CP, Cambridge and MC there. When we got there we had to whip the bumper off as the splitter was catching the rollers - bloody gay bodykits  ;)
I was asked to drive the car on the rollers which is an experience in itself!
The basic spec of my engine is a 1.6 8v on twin 40 carbs. We had some 30mm, 32mm, 35mm chokes and some fuel additive to play around with. The first run using 30mm chokes produced around 140BHP @ 5000rpm. I was very pleased with this result, but now the tweaking could begin.
We played around with the distributer settings and increased the revs to 6000rpm, this produced around 150bhp :)
We stuck the 35mm chokes and to our surprise found no difference in the power output, if anything it wasn't as high as the 30mm chokes :| We tried several runs at different revs, but it still wasnt as good. So we stuck the 32mm's in estimating these would provide the best results.
We wern't dissapointed with the 32mm chokes. The car produced between 150 and 155BHP. Mixing the fuel additive and playing around with the distibuter settings took the BHP reading to 168BHP.
Everyone was exstatic with the final result. I was thrilled to bits that the car didnt blow up. I'm not saying there wern't a couple of hic-ups throughout the afternoon, but everything turned out well in the end.
Massive thanks to MC and CP for the work to the engine. Without there knowledge and commitment I probably would never have modified the engine. Thanks to Cambridge and Dan for there help and support.
It's been a bit of a mission at times and I've had my fair share of ups and downs during the rebuild process. I'm hugely relieved to have gotten this far. It's not over yet, there are still some items that need to be purchased, but I think I need to get christmas out of the way first, lol.
So there we have it. 168BHP @ 6000rpm from a Naturally Aspirated 1.6 8v engine. At the end of the day, it's just a figure and it's how the car performs on the road that matters.
Needless to say I'm very happy with the results though ;)
Cheers
Jim
you lucky sod.... :o:o:o:o

Well done jim. Excellent power figures!
Glad to see its all come together in the end! And what a result.
So you can now give the valver boys a run for there money huh :)
Look forward to seeing you at somepoint next year when i finally get mine together and completed :)
cya later mate
well done MC'CP'Jim! excellent job!

Good figures there mate. Very impressive for a 1.6 8v, shame about no tourque figures tho, would have been nice to see.
awesome mate. so 32mm chokes recomended then.
Ummm Not really. Yes from a ballpark view, but this goes to show that regardless of engine spec the ideal chokes for your car are what the engine will accept. it has been proven before using 2 same spec engines and into that mine wont even run right with 30mm chokes but we gained more from 34mm over 32, with a slightly lesser spec.
On a positive note, over the moon it has all come together finally after all the hard work jim has put into it. I think i said everything on the phone to him but well done matey 8)
New pistons, ARP rod bolts, main bearings set replaced, new big end bearings. Con-rods have been de-seamed and shot peened. Head and block Chemically cleaned. Head and block skimmed to increase compression. Block has been re-bored to 1650cc. Crankshaft has been reground. B+ head with additional porting and polishing. Piper A13BP300H cam. Black Diamond clutch. Webber twin 40 carburettors with 32mm chokes. Polished trumpets. Two K&N bolt on air filters. Twin throttle linkage. Fuel pressure regulator. NGK Sparkplugs. Magnecor leads. Magnex 4-2-1 manifold with heat wrap. Centre exit stainless steel custom exhaust with oval tailpipe. F13 gearbox with 4.18 final drive. Griffith quick shift gear linkage.
Or there abouts ;)
Jim
Awesome result there Jim.
How about you 1600 boys compile an ultimate 1600 tuning guide including pictures, references links etc? I know there was the beginnings of one kicking around a few years ago...
PDF it or whatever :) Just a thought.

Cheers guys, im very happy with the outcome :)
Fester, an ultimate tuning guide would be good, but really each engine is unique. You never know if an engine with the same spec as minewere to be built, 34mm chokes may work this time round. It's all about experimenting at the end of the day.
One thing I will say, is make sure you find a tuners who know what there doing. You can have all the gadgets in the world, but experience and knowning your stuff really counts!
Jim
nice one jim really pleased for you as all your hard work is payi off
and your also gonna be able to worry dan in the 1.6 8v class now

Would be intresting if we could get dan on the same RR.
Simlar cars/Specs
Then compare them on pod / tracks
Would be intresting to see how they compare. And would also make a good write up on how both cars have been built/specs and drivers views!
Perhaps even let each other drive the other persons cars !
ANyhow well done again!

Excellent result there. My brothers have almost the same spec engine as that in their corsa b an are currently running it in. They have a rolling road some time in jan so have to see what theirs gets.
Glad its all payed off for you Jim, nice to see it finnaly coming together!
Bloody hell! Good result there mate! I would be happy if mine was throwing out that much!!
Congrats!
Cheers for the comments guys.
Ben, your spot on, everythings finally coming together.
Unfortunatley for my bank balance it doesnt stop here, lol. Theres a militer and shift light to get, the cam belt tensioner needs to be changed for one that doesnt automatically adjust, and then theres a LSD to get.
All part of the fun though :)

WOW im gob smacked jim, fantastic result there mate,i would go as far to say you are probably runing more power then mine
Im really glad all the wait and hard work(by all involved) has come to such a good resualt, your going to have one of,if the nicest 1.6 8v t40 nova in the uk once all is done, just makes me question my converion again... :?
Might make a track only car with my old 1.6 engine, stick on some 40's :D
Well done again to all that got this car to where it is now.. :+:

We wern't dissapointed with the 32mm chokes. The car produced between 150 and 155BHP
Very good figure without addative. What addative was used for the extra gain as i wouldnt mind using some? :?: :?:
Sweet power figure, I would be well happy with that :) I live quite local to Wilshires and have used Pete to setup several mk2 escorts for before, he knows everything there is to know about setting up carbs, top bloke !
Nice one Jim. I knew it would be something special when i saw it in Rifle Range Motorsports workshop
Nice, any 1/4 times?
Not yet, only got it RR'd yesterday after running the engine in.

nice. So is it fast enough to beat dan's i wonder?
Time will tell.
I don't think you mentioned what camshaft your using. Did you have to adjust the cam timing at all?
Edit: Just seen it, Piper. Is that a 300degree shaft?
where's the power band on it?

Those figures are great jim. And as everyone else has said well done!! nice to see a 8v get a massive power out put. Shame there was no torque reading!
bruce
great stuff jim, what'sit drive like now? or havn't you driven it in anger yet?
nice one very good result

Awesome Jim!!! Very well done to you and your cronies  It looks like all the work has paid off. Just think I had to run 10PSi of Boost to produce the same BHP as that!!! :o I look forward to having a snoop round it on the 9th (you are bringing it I hope?)
Well done again
Neil
well done Jim...impressive figures
- what about a Novaload rolling road day sometime next year? that way we can compare similiar spec'd engines on the same rolling road

well done its paid off for you :D
it was a nice afternoon out lol.
no torque figures as Mr RR said they mean nothing unless you can have a 1:1 overall gear ratio. as the measured torque changes from gear to gear, and obv varies from FD to FD too.
understandable really from him, and boy does the RR guy know his stuff. I had a chat with him when jim and mc went to get fuel, suffice to say the 1.2 WILL be going there for its setup.
ps well done jimbo

Well done Jim :D
Really pleased for you, im sure you will enjoy the engine to the maximum.

Just a couple of extra points that maybe of interest.
Jims engine is the one i had in my nova originally. The spec when i had it was std block and internals and CR, twin 40's 30mm chokes 125 mains, B++ head, matched and ported inlet manifold by me, 285 piper cam set up with a Vernier pulley, the magnecor leads and same plugs, magnex 4:2:1 stainless steel manifold and system, same drive trains and ratios and wheel size(16's) as jim is now. Co-incidently i rolling roaded it at Wilshers. After tuning by Peter I got a figure of 150 hp @ around 5750 rpm out of it on optimax.
As a result of MC's tuning idea's (which included trying the fuel additive) the power has gone up around 18hp or 12%. This comparitive data is as accurate as you are likely to get.
The other interesting point was that Peter was really suprised by the fuel additive. Its the first one he's tried that he had actually got to to work and appears worth using. He has been the Mini Miglia Challenge Champion for the last 4 out of 5 years using his own developed engine so he's tried most things! Even without changing the timing there was an increase in power.
Final point is make sure your tracking isn't significantly out before you get on the rollers for maximum power readings

fantastic news guys.... i'm really pleased to hear it well done to everyone that helped jim
Holy crap dude!!
:o
That's a fa-kin awesome result Jim - you must be chuffed BIG TIME!!
Well done for sticking with it, better than your tyres will stick to the road without an LSD!
After driving Jims car I had a big grin on my face. It has the horsepower that would be expected from a 16v engine yet still has bags of low down torque. The car idles smoothly and I have a few more tricks left to make sure it performs 100%.
