View Full Version : 1.6 16v - 150bhp ?
what would it take to get a 1.6 16v to around 150bhp?
just to get a bit of discussion going

throttle bodies. i was talking to this lad at pvs 04 and he had a 1.6 16v on tb's. it had 159bhp at flywheel
expensive to get 150bhp then i take it
so what we talking...?
major headwork is it? lairy cams?
sounds like it might be expensive?
well my mate had 200 bhp from one with mild head work, mild cams, pocketed standard pistons, vernier pullys, sbd manifold and 40mm throttle boddies. the bottom end was lightened and ballenced but that wont gain power
cool.
how much did it cost you mate?
barn, sbd's TB kit is advertised as 162 or somthin like that, and it's about ?1200+ a manifold (?300 i think)
throttle bodies arent exactly that cheap :?
You dont have to go to to tb's for that power which is quite modest for a 1.6 assumin you are talkin flywheel power.

the thing that lets this engine down is the inlet, if you get rid of that you can get very easy power gains. I would imagine twin carbs would give a nice increase in power, never seen any on this engine though. But a set of throttle bodies an you'll be at 150 or very close i would think
Carbs/Bodies will get nigh on the same powers really.
Mine should be around the 160 mark, with TBs etc, and have to spend a further ?700 plus to get it to 185 brake plus.
The cams and pistons need to be modded to get it passed 165 really.

It was mental headwork!
Piper 285 cams, was a Janspeed manifold not an SBD one.
Standard pistons.
It once made 199bhp on a fairly questionable rolling road.
Throttle bodies with no other mods will easily make 150bhp @ ?2k ish.
Your probably looking at around the same money to get that power without throttle bodies, but it will be maximum power on that route, whilst tb's is minimum. Your talking mantzel powerbox type inlet, unichip, rev limit raise, headwork and probably very tame cams. Although I question whether a genuine 150bhp is achievable without tb's, although lots claim it.
yes, lots claim it, but look at the R/R results in the thread in general! :D

carbs would make ~150bhp too with significantly less expenditure assuming u can get bits used:
45 dellortos - say ?300
inlet - ?120ish
megasquirt ignition system ?150ish
mapping and setup ?200ish
so thats ?800 give or take and you'd have a beasty :)
(/me wonders what my next engine mods are going to be)
