I recently fitted a pair of JBL-GTO-425e 10cm door speakers into custom made door pods, at the moment they are connected directly to the head unit, and they sound cr*p!
They are rated to 100w and they head unit is supposed to kick out 45w, when you get to about 3/4 volume the speaker starts to sound cr*p, would I be better off connecting them to the amp which can give 75w. Before someone suggests it, I will check in the morning but I'm sure the polarity is right on the speakers.

cheers

it maybe there is too much bass going through them. iv got some jbls in one of my cars, if too much bass goes through em they some crap cos they cant handle it turn ur bass down a bit and let ur sub give out the bass. it may also be that your head unit distorts a little when its turned up to. if so run them through an amp and crossover.

either that or fit new cable to them could be a break in the old existing stuff

OK, the wires are new, I did wonder if it was my door pods, I've never seen a set so I wasn't sure how to make 'em, they are basically a small sealed box, I'm wondering if I cut the back of the door pod and the door trim this would allow more space for the sound to resonate.

wadya reckon?

Could try lining the pods with some brown bread or dynamat?

have you sealed all the joints in the box with silicon?

Epo, cheers for the help, I thought pics may help to give you an idea what I've done.

the box is sealed and only slightly larger than the speakers themselves, so do I need to make the enclosure larger by cutting the door trim behind the box and cut a hole in the back of the door pod itself? that will then give the speaker a larger enclosure.

I didn't seal it with silicone, thought the fibreglass and about 20mm of p38 all round would do it 2 b honest, I fu*kd up on the mdf sizes and had to make up aprox 20mm all round with filler so its real thick.

I haven't covered them yet but was going to use matching grey leatherish material.
