ok chaps i finnaly manage to remove my computers evil copy ov windows me with the use ov a winME boot disk (cheers cambridge)

then i formatted the c drive as i was sick ov the thing crashing (i had a computer shop set it all up and i rekon they did a shit job)

i then installed windows 98

started setting everything back up

everything is sorted so far cept i can get my modem to work

windows has detected a new pci comunication device

it does its little thing searching for the driver

i point it to the correct driver ont he cd like the instructions say

and it says it can find the driver

when i check the modem pci comunication device properties it says the driver hasnt been loaded CODE28.

any ideas?

i installed this modem on my last computer b4 i blew it up and had no probs, but when it was rebuilt with the new mother board and stuff, the shop installed it.

ive tried messing about with com ports and stuff but got nowhere.

i went back to the shop today but it looks like its closed up for christmas/new year

i dont like using my dads computer (like i am now) cos its got no porn

on a plus note the computer has been running 2 days now and hasnt crashed once!! (wooohooo)

prob all fuck up again once i get the modem working LOL

Download the latest drivers and install them. Some drivers that Windows uses automatically are rubbish. Failing that try a different PCI slot.

been playing all day

had sum advice from mr tunclif

still no joy
did a format and reinstalation ov the c drive again without the modem installed, so it could have a clean base to work on

no joy

i have a sneaky feeling that i have to mess about with the bios (which im not going to do)

im gonna leave it and get the shop who done it last time to sort it.
a knackerd modem had crossed my mind, but its unlikley that simply formating the c drive would blow it up

ive also tried a difrent pci slot and that didnt work either (still it worked in that certin slot b4 so why not now)

computers, i fucking hate them

on the plus side it still hasnt crashed :D

well go in the bios and turn com2 off for starters... then if u have a decent modem, when u install drivers it'll ask u which com port u wanna use. so choose two.

errrrmmmmmmmmm... i can always fix shit when its infront of me but i aint reformatted for 2 years so tis hard to remember :D

If it's a PCI modem, move it about to a diff slot, maybe it's sharing an IRQ with something it dunna wanna be sharing with.

If there's grass on the pitch... :D

tried the diffrent slot thing

im thinking that it wont install the driver becuase its not sure what it is.

the reason is in the devices menu its there as a pci comunication device not a modem (there is also a huge yello ? over it which must mean "oi sort it u plonker")

supposed i could try evry diff pci slot, but like i say it was working with that slot b4hand.

shop who built it all up is still shut.

This may or may not help. To make sure you have the correct drivers for it, make a note of the FCC ID number on the card and then goto www.driverguide.com and search for the drivers there using the FCC ID number. The username and password for driverguide is
Username : drivers
Password : all

hope this helps bud

2.0 16v on it's way soon!!! (again!!!!) :)

can you not just set it up using the standard 56k modem driver that is on the windows cd?
i did with mine when that was playing stupid wankers and not accepting the factory driver and it works fine.

The name is misleading - I am not wise, or wooden.

no becuase it doesnt find a modem?

it checks the com ports and finds no modem connected?
which is why i belive the drivers i have, wont install (cos computer thinks its not a modem)

wtf is a pci comunication device anyways?

delved into the bios just b4 (scary shit in there, looks like i can increase cpu voltages and stuff!)

played about with sum pci settings etc etc and still got no where

right give this a try....

When ur installing the drivers ur probably choosing the option "Search for a suitable driver for my device" and then telling it to search CD drives.
Instead, choose the other option "Display a list of known drivers bla bla bla".
On one of the next screens you should see a button saying "Have Disk" click that and navigate to ur Win98 drivers on the CD by clicking "Browse".
You *should* then see the correct device in the big white box. If so click next and go through the rest of the instalation and see what happens, otherwise its summat else and start again. lol

By doing it that way your forcing it to use the drivers on the disk.

Hope it helps

Happy New Year
Kev
