It's my parents mondeo, it's a 2lt 16v 136bhp engine and it seems to be missing when at low revs. It accelerated fine and idles perfectly but at low revs (2800 or less) it kind of jerks abit. They've had it on the machine and they came up with nothing. Fitted new plugs and leads and hasn't got any better.

It did seem to clear up abit with an oil change but came back quite quickly. Could it be the hydraulic valve lifters?

It seemed to start doing it when my dad changed the starter motor on it but its probably completely un-related.

Any suggestions much appreciated as i have run out of ideas

could be anything........

egr valve is most likely or iac valve take them off and clean them with carb cleaner.

If it was sticking lifters you would loose compression on a chamber and the car would run like a sack of horse manure when it idles not just at a set rpm.

By the way whats so special about the engine for you to state it has 136bhp?

Nothing special about it, i just thought letting you know exactly what engine it is might help, e.g common faults in those engine's or something.

If it was the iac valve wouldn't that affect it on idle aswell? I'll check them both though, thanks for the info

the 2.0l is that power as std,
my old 1.8 used to do exactly the same, mine was cured with an adjustable fuel pressure regulator, got it properl;y setup on the rolling road, but thats not reallky any use here is it.
if it was lifters they would also be noisy, it could be anything like already said,
if you can try to get hold of another 2.0l mondeo and try swapping ign bits over to see where the problem is, or get parts you know are good and swap them, like coil pack, egr valve, clean the idle speed control valve (bastard to get to, under inlet manifold!), go through everything systematically.

my escort (smaeish zetec engine) done this and then the revs started to not come down for the first 3 to 5 minutes of driving ie i could put foot on the accelorator it would erv and then stick. cleaned the idle control valve (bumhole to get to) the it was fine.

That isn't really what it does so i think i could probably count that out. I'll clean the egr valve up and see if that sorts it out first.

Stevenford_uk did you mean the idle speed control valve is under the inlet manifold? I haven't got a mondeo haynes  Do you know where the egr valve is?

If the egr valve doesn't clear it up i'll look into other ignition parts and work through it i suppose! Thanks for the help guys

the idle control valve is on the underside of the inlet manifold. the best, if not only, way to get to it is to get the car on a ramp and go from underneath. also try cleaning out the throttle body around the butterfly bit. I think if it was the tappets and oil etc. you would notice it most of the time and hear a rattle. Like most escort engines :(

mind if it is the egr valve or iac valve to check that the solenoid is still working as they feck up most of the time and stop moving full stop.

Mondeos are very fussy about the oil they use. Its best to get the stuff straight from Fords . The lifters play up hell with the wrong oil.

I think??? the rating is something like 5/30 if your not near a Ford dealer

I agree with Retrosi though, the EGR valve is a common culprit, which is about 50 quid
