Hi All,
Been very busy this week sorting out my rear inner arches......
The idea was simple.... Get it as low as poss by whatever means necessary And retain a good amount of suspension travel.
As expected this has resulted in a lot of hard graft... and some custom inner arch frames (to hold the car together, as i've cut so much bl00dy metal away!!!! :o )... I've also had to modify the rear beam to allow it to pivot without catching anything. But as a result, im now able to unwind the coilovers and have at least 1.5" of suspension travel I reckon.....
So here goes......The first cut
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v12/novaneil/ArchMod1.jpg
Then cut some more and fold the metal back
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v12/novaneil/ArchMod2.jpg
Add a coilover into the mix
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v12/novaneil/ArchMod3.jpg
Weld in a simple frame
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v12/novaneil/ArchMod4.jpg
And there you have the basis for a very low 17'd Nova.... This shows the full extent that the wheels can go to if needs be.... The actual running height will be at least an 1" higher than this.... But don't worry, the Wheel will still be well into the arch :D
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v12/novaneil/ArchMod5.jpg
The frames will now have sheet steel welded over them, and revelant holes cut out in the top for the Coilovers to poke through. There will be a Strut brace going across them... and also a Cage will be bolted onto them.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v12/novaneil/ArchMod6.jpg
When finished the car will sit slightly lower than this at the rear..... This is how it sat before I started cutting anything without springs on.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v12/novaneil/Low1.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v12/novaneil/Low2.jpg
And finally here are some pics of my new Custom made tubular driveshafts.... Which are good for at least 400lb's ft of Torque ...... Not that i'll be running that sort of power though ...
The Shafts next to them are standard GTE ones....

very nice, looks like a lot of work to get it to sit low, my v8 should sit very low on the rear as ive done same sort of frame at the back but mounted the rear axle high up in the car.
nice one mate hell of a lot of work gone into that looks sound
thats crazy mate  but after seein your last car i think this is goin to be somethin special :D

Neil you nutter! I would have the nerve to go cutting my shell like that, looks like its going to pay off though mate
What are you doing about the exhaust? I take it theres no room for it to go over the beam.
You having the back stripped out then i take it mate?
Didnt you get the equal length shafts done in the end?
Sorry for all the questions, just that i havnt spoke to you in ages.

Cheers for the comments guys!!! :D Im glad you all approve.
To answer a few questions....
Yes the exhaust will catch on the beam as it stands... But im cutting a section of metal out above the beam.... then rewelding to allow clearance. (sounds good in theory... But I haven't attempted it yet)
The car is going to be used for three things.... 1) Track days  2) 1/4mile and 3) Shows. It will be dry use only... And the rear will be completely stripped, and sprayed up the same colour as the exterior (some silver... haven't decided which yet).
Now too sure how its going to handle just yet... But im hoping that it should be fine for the track.... Just not so good on the lovely british roads we have... because of where the rear beam pivots. But I always have the option to wind the coilovers out futher to raise it up.
I was going for equal length shafts.... But due to my new engine choice (which will be revealed soon...) I can't run them. You'll see why when I unveil it.
The "hopeful" Completion date will be the End of April (Castle Combe) then the week after its off to Germany.
I'll keep you posted on the progress.
Thanks again for the comments.
Neil
'kin hell Neil that's outrageous!! Both the suspension and the chunky driveshafts!!!
:o
Why not do some kind of side exit exhaust? Save you chopping bits out of the rear beam (Which doesn't sound like the greatest idea in the world to me!!)
NovaNeil
05-12-04, 02:30 PM
Hi Jules,
Funny you should say that, as I have a nice Side exit sitting at home... Its just I went to all the trouble of welding in the spare wheel well so I could have a twin centre exhaust... and I've got my heart set on it really.
But your right... if it looks like its going to be a nightmare, and not very safe structurally... then i'll opt for the side exit :D
Cheers
Neil

eek.... i hope the frames go through the floor etc... cause currently it looks like your relighing on the welds for strength.... welds should only be used to hold stuff... the stress and strain should be passed metal to metal

not sure on those wheels tho, never liked the spiders !
good work tho !

05-12-04, 05:43 PM
Them drive shafts are very nice, who made them?
I can see the same problem as Ste though, that new suspension mount you have fabricated is not really structually sound is it!. TBH if your going to do something as critical as mod the suspension top mounts you really shud look int it properly and sorry but you aint looked into that properly.
So you have brought the old ATC nova engine then? Thats Dave P's old shell iirc.
Rick
NovaNeil
05-12-04, 06:04 PM
:D You guys make me laugh.... Don't worry its structually sound alright! Believe me. That plate on the floor where the spare wheel well is is 3mm thick, it is welded into the corners of the car all the way round. And those legs that steve was on about go through the floor and are welded to plates which will be welded to the underside of the floor. As I said before its W.I.P
And if that wasn't enough, the sheets that will cover the frame (2mm thick) will also be welded to the floor... So it ain't moving!!!!
I know its a little extreme.... But im actually purposly adding weight in the back to try and balance out the weight im having in the front. This things going to be dam quick (hopefully) and I don't want the back breaking loose quite as fast as it would with no weight in the back, if you know what I mean.
No Dave P's old shell is down south somewhere... Look in the GSi section, its just emerged with its new owner Ben G.
This is my Silver GSi Shell that i've had years (it started as a 1.6 8v Turbo, its in the Turbos section).
ATC..... Whats that then
The shafts are from an unknown origin.... a mate of a mate sort of thing, but I can find out if you like.
Neil
Rick Draper
05-12-04, 06:23 PM
Ok Neil to save arguments lets say they are structual. Have you altered the main thing that prevents novas handling really well when they are lowered?
Dunno about the shafts, got some place that made some for MAD that will possibly make mine for my nova.
Think when mine is turreted i will stick to the Graham De Suys way of doing it. Rick

Just not so good on the lovely british roads we have... because of where the rear beam pivots.
I would seriously consider making up some new mounting brackets for the rear beam, so that the pivoting point is further up in the shell. Maybe with a number of holes drilled, so you can alter the pivot point for varying ride heights.
I guess this is what your on about aswell Rick....
Good luck anyways mate!

Yes. There in no other way to do this though IMHO than probably removing the chassis leg and starting again from scratch with regards to the mounting points. Unless you have done it before Austin?
Thanks

now,now boys, calm down !
surely if it's only a 1/4 mile / show car it shouldn't need to be masssssivly strong.. ?

Well if you think about it, start of a 1/4 mile all the loading goes through the rear of the car, so it's vitally important!
As Rick says, there are 2 ways of getting the rear really low, we've looked at both, and lets just say one way is a hell of alot more extreme, hey Rick

the 1/4 is just a small part of what this car will do,as i know for a fact neil will be taking it to the RING as the trip is pland in may with the pvg,i carnt wait..

the car already looks pretty awesome

Cheers for the advice guys.... I have already looked into moving the whole beam up... and 'realistically' I can only move it about 5mm before I get into trouble with the chassis leg (as you've mentioned). And Im not really experienced enough to start hacking that about just yet.
But the good news is its on Coilovers :P Which means it can be wound right down low for shows (with no scrubbige) and then I can wind it back up to an 80mm drop say for Trackdays and get the handling back.
If you have any more advice/comments please say, as its great to get other opinions on how this should be done to good effect as im feeling my way at the moment.
Cheers

not done this myself, but I think someone on RB may have done. But still, getting some camber change in the rear by bining the rear beam would be nice...
Philsutton
06-12-04, 05:37 PM
could do something similiar to what the grass trackers do an get rid of the rear beam altogether you would to have to have a floor instead of nothing like they do.

06-12-04, 06:10 PM
i dont know much on all this. but. after all this effort would it not be worthwhile adding independant suspension ie wishbones at the back. if that makes sense. i may have understood completely wrong im a bit amateur on this one. but im assuming the rear beam is the bits instead of wishbones....

Thats what i meant!! Run them off wishbone type things. But i meant keep the floor etc as well, not just a space frame with nova panels on..... would be a lot of work but would be damn sweet. Do any novas/corsas have independant rear suspension, ocs then you could steal the set up. and ideas of where to strengthen. otherwise its cable ties and bodge job ahoy!

But heres the best bit...... 320 lb's ft Torque :D And thats without the 75 shot of Nos, with that and the cool blue fuel this engine can run over 400 lb's ft torque! But im not going to get carried away just yet :) The NOS won't be in it till later on in the year. 07-12-04, 08:22 PM
Well done for guessing by the way Rick.... I didn't want to say earlier what it was cause i've just got the pics developed....
The answer to your question is simple:
1) LET's are boring (no offence) and common as muck! (once you've seen one in a Nova you've seen them all... apart from yours obviously as you have some very trick bits... but in general there just plain) This is more special as its different, Although you are right... more weight over the front can't be a bad things for the start (having said that, When Ade was launching on Slicks the Autronic was clocking a 0-60 time of just over 3 secs :o ) With Remoulds on 15's it clocked 4.7secs! So on my 17's im hoping for around 5 secs.
2) Weight! You would not believe how much lighter this thing is than an LET!!! Its mad! I thought they were very similar but not anymore. And as I want to do a lot of trackdays, I thought this would be an advantage over the XE & LET Nova boys.....
Just wait till you see what Ades got planned for next year.........

It will have NOS before the end of the year... But as I said earlier it will e down tuned a bit so i'll be sticking to a 50shot... But that will be USC if not TRAX at the earlist.
Neil
p.s: All the 1.6 8v Turbo bits are for sale (as a complete kit) but I think I have a buyer for them. PM if anyone might be interested if it falls through... if not I will be selling the Turbo on its own (with manifold) and the DTA bits to someone else on this site building a pukka NA 1.6 8v (but I can't tell you who).

I look forward to seeing it at the shows as well as up the strip and round some tracks.

I really wanted to do the 1.6 to over 200bhp but this engine came up and I could resist, also a few mates of mine are building very quick cars, and I wanted something to match them in a straight line. I know i've scarificed some of the handling and you small block boys will eat me through the twisty stuff.... But im hoping the smile on my face when I open her up on the straight will compensate for that.... we shall see.

Karl thanks for the offer! I may take you up on that after Christmas when I start putting the loom back in.....How are you with wiring diagrams :|
Cheers
Neil
just out of interest mate. the flywheel on your new engine looks like its the xe one. just wondering why really as the 8v one is much thinner and lighter. (and ive had it lightened more lol) do you need to fit the xe flywheel to fit the f20 and 28 boxes

IIRC it has a 2ltr let crank and i believe they are 8 bolt flywheels not 6 bolt like a 8 valve one. Rick

WOW!Part 2.

:o
Would be nice to see it in a more 'road' car that it's been in previously - I assume 2 foot wide slicks aren't on the 'planned' list.
Wonder what it'd drive round like as a day to day car?! lol!!

The Flywheel is one from a 2.0 Ecotec Lump as Ade (previous owner) reckoned it gives a better clamping surface or something for the clutch :?:
Lets just say it cost a little bit more than an LET lump to buy and a bit less than the cost of some Throttle Bodys.
Did another 6 hours on it last night. The rear of the car is now painted in primer... but i've now been kicked out of the shed I was working in, so no more work for a week or two now
