Hi there,

I thought I should post up some piccys of my car whilst its been rebuilt.

I brought it off a garage who refused to sell it cheap over the last 5 years, because of this the car just sat around and got very mouldy and bits of it went missing to people who kept using it for spares. Eventually the garage wanted rid of it and asked me if I wanted it, as I have a mate who is a painter and enough valver bits to build about 10 engines I thought It would be nice to totally rebuild one for myself to enjoy, rather drive round in other peoples so called well built novas.

Here are some pics of it in primer, the only panels it needed was a complete front panel, 2 wings and a rear quarter and a door.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v306/Jatec/otherside.jpg

Here are some pics of what it looked like this morning, it was painted a week or so ago, it has been sitting in a shed and needed to be moved so I could strip everything off the bottom of the car, rub it all down until it was nice and smooth etc.. then paint the whole floor and inside the arches.

I'm quite happy so far, looking forward to bolting all the nice bits to it, I've managed to get the original bodywork parts book out of my local vauxhall garage so all the brackets and roof runners and bits here and there are nice and new which will make it a whole lot nicer once finished.

I also managed to pick up a very rare 40k xe out of a calibra which I thought I had sold but the buyer has just let me know he cant afford it so it looks like i'll have a lovely clean nova with a very sweet xe in it :)

Unless anyone wants one?

I'm trying to keep the exterior as standard looking as possible, original bumpers painted a sort of already gelled grey colour, and if I could get the original grey strips for the doors etc.. I would, good luck to anyone who tries knicking it cos its well armed and the only thing worth taking is the headunit, I'm not into loud stereos anymore so I have nothing to pinch.

Have u not seen my guard dog lol

Its on mint original bumpers at the mo, its was a 14 SR, when I find a set of mint gsi bumpers I might consider having them painted up and fitted, my blue one looks well tough for the gsi front bumper and I agree they look the nuts but thought I'd just leave itt looking like a wolf in sheeps clothing for now

Hi mate

I am very intrested in the rebuild of your escort, i remember that car when it was built. I am just getting into my new project wich will be a cossie powered mk1 escort.

Any photos yet of the escort build?

Nova looks mint by the way mate  Whats the spec going to be on the engine?

Both cars look stunning mate, the respray on the nova looks nice. Was the car originally white to begin with? That escort is really nice, you should keep them arches, they look really mean.

Jonlem

The car was originally white, I just thought with a bit of patience and by stripping it myself it would be a good excuse to respray the whole thing, so far its looking great, monday we should get the underside finished off.

The escort is the x revs project car, had it a few years now, stuffed a rod out of the original injection engine and had a 200bhp pinto on 45's which was rather tasty, fuel bill was crippling my business though so sold the engine luckily for what the build cost was and swapped the brand new 45's and manifold for a LET engine needing a rebuild, which is how the turbo nova I had come about.

The escort is having the tarmac group 4 arches which aren't as roundy, I just love the look of them like that,

Karl, doing a mk1 is the same as doing the mk2 , it can be done in many different ways, just depends what power your going for how well you want it too handle. I've got a mate who prepares group 4 spec mk2's and the cars are just perfect in every way.
I managed to get a 40k xe that had been in a crashed car in storage, DIS pack style so my cams and group N wont be any good for it but I'm just going to use the nitrous with a progressive controller. Will expect to use 100+bhp shot with the controller which will be perfect for when I need it. I'm looking forward to getting Adams engine built and in the car to see how that performs, should be very quick in his stripped motor!

I'll keep you all informed

NovaNeil

Very nice cars mate! :D Will we be seeing you and the Nova at any shows this year? Or will we just find the escort at a load of track days 8)

Neil

Jonlem
05-12-04, 12:21 PM
I dont think the escort is going to be finished this year. So I'll just have to show the nova if I hear of anywhere worth taking it. I'm more interested in getting it setup well with over 100bhp gas then I will try and put it into the low 13's still as a whole car though. When the escort is done it going to live on a track for as long as I can afford to put it on!

Cant wait myself to have them both all finished

Jonlem
14-12-04, 02:42 AM
Not quite following up on the nova as its still down my mates paintshop bcos we have both been a bit busy doing other bits and getting ready for crimbo although I've made myself a new purchase for my escort today,

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v306/Jatec/engine1.jpg

For those that know there YB engines, here's the spec:

A1 Rallysport built engine:

Motorsport 200 Block
New Mahle pistons
WRC Multi Later Headgasket
ARP Headstuds
Worked Cylinder head, flowed etc..
Hyrbid T34 turbo with -31 Actuator
3 bar map sensor
803's and stage 3 chip
RS500 Intercooler
Mocal Oil Cooler
AP 6 Paddle clutch

Approx power 350bhp

i dont know the exact spec of everything like the cams etc.. yet as I'm waiting for the receipts but the engine has only just been built with most new bits, turbo, pistons, lifters etc.. and then some tw*t decided to pull out in front of him on saturday and he had to head for the central barrier on the motorway! Glad he is ok but the car is destroyed so its being broken and the engine was offered to me :)

I'll have some more pics of the nova up soon as I hope

14-12-04, 08:58 PM
are you talking about my mk2 escort or the nova? If you meant the nova: If you look at the inner wing photos you will notice that the wing has been altered and sits right in, maybe the seam sealer makes it look a little normal but trust me there is plenty of room, haven't ever had a alternator clearance issue when doing 16v novas as I've had them done this way everytime, so far so good

Jonlem
21-01-05, 08:20 PM
more pics, the car is now all painted, the wings are in primer and getting painted tomorrow along with the wheels, the front suspension has been fitted but not the rears yet.
The fuel tank needs to be re fitted along with all new brake lines front to back,

all fair and good cutting the chassis and welding a box in but its a pain in the arse to do really. as long as the chassis is stitch welded after you bash it in then you will have no problems.

Jonlem
23-01-05, 10:49 PM
Had a good day on the car today, got plenty done, the engine and box is now in, all the suspension is now all fitted properly, the wings have been painted and just bolting up and polishing.
Tomorrow I'm going to get some new headlights and indicators, a load of clips, a steering coloumn ! as mine appears slightly bent on the end ! Just got to clean the interior again, and wash all the seats, then its just time to wire in the xe and a few finishing off bits.
I can't wait to put the wheels on my car :)

The car is now back at home, I have removed all the steering column as the original one was bent a little. I have emptied all the crap out of the car and given it a quick hoover and I'll get some pics up tomorrow of it in the daylight. I have got to fit the wiring loom and fuel tank this weekend along with interior after I have washed all the carpets and cleaned all the dust up that is everywhere

The v6 calipers have been shot blasted and had all rust and previous red paint taken off, they have now been sprayed white and look very good, I hope they look as nice on the car, all I need then is the brake lines and aeroquip lines and the brakes will be complete when I have played around with the drums a bit and painted them white too.

Sorting an exhaust is going to be the dificult thing bcos I dont want anything too loud and I had a stainless magnex on my other xe nova and it just doesn't give the note i'm looking for, I still have the system from my mates old nova with a 3.5" outwardly rolled stainless scorpion, its a lovely looking tailpipe, the exhaust is totally straight through so it will need a centre box making to keep the noise down, If I'm not happy with it I'll probably just buy a new system to save anymore hassle.

pics coming shortly

looking ace mate,is the engine a late spec one then,as can i see a none dizzy type pack on the side there??

Scott

Yes it is a late spec engine, it has only done a genuine 41k and I got it for very good money so I thought it would be a nice standard engine to put in the car. I had a fully rebuilt xe with Courtenay cams in my garage that I built, but I had to fit it to my other nova which I have now sold.

Its a bit of a shame its a late engine as I have a Group N ecu and some cams I would of put it in otherwise, but nice standard xe power is enough and the gas is for 1/4 miles which should help it a bit,

Got to order a few bits tomorrow and send the indicators back as they sent me valeo headlights but cheap and nasty inicators that dont fit well at all  I had a set of GM ones laying about which fitted really well so I'll just buy a genuine set or some valeo ones as I expect they would fit right, clear round side repeaters are also on the list.

I hope to see it running by the end of the week with all the new brake lines and interior back in, still looking for TD shafts!!! help

I use a karcher car carper cleaner, its a sort of industrial unit, I'm actually a valeter by trade, I just gave it up as I'm fed up with cleaning peoples crap up. it does work well though.

I've been having a few problems with my gear linkage, it has been very hard to select gears and I had this problem on the track day, well it really came and haunted me tonight cos as I was reaching the limiter in 4th and selcting 5th it wouldn't go, I tried again, got 3rd instead , it got time to rev for 2 secs max and I got the clutch back down but it was missin already so something is not right, I reckon its jumped about a million teeth or just clearances got a little close at 16k !, either or its gonna be bad, luckily I have 2 heads ready to go in my garage so I can fix it quick but neither are dis pack heads so they dont have the attachment for the coil pack, only a minor problem I suppose but I'm a little hacked off with myself for not easing off rather than attempting to change again as this could of been avoided, I just hope the head isn't too bad as I know its never been off and with 40k on it, it would of been mint,

keep your fingers crossed for me ! I'm taking it to bits tomorrow evening, I'll get some photos together lol

bugger :(

Also since I built the car I have had a bit of a issue of the car pulling to the left under acceleration, I had it tracked up b4 the track day but the car wasn't used until donny, it done it all day but I put up with it, as we couldn't find a obvious cause, I have noticed that you get a lot of flex in the crossmember due to not having any bushes on the tie bars so I haev ordered a new crossmember which will be strenghtened in every way possible to eliminate any unwanted movement, the only other thing I can think of to be at fault is maybe the steering rack, The car was skipping a lot when cornering at donny and still does it now, I have softened the suspension and itstill does it on the road, it seems possibly that one wheel (passenger) has a bit of movement in it when you accelerate, I cannot get it to do anything on axle stands but something definately isn't right, a new rack will be fitted whilst the head is off to see if this cures the problem, if not I'm just going to have to check every last bit in detail to see what the problem is, the diff does make it pull about on the road but it never done it in my mates so I'm thinking possibly that the rack could of been damaged in someway by the previous owner,

tbh though I just want to see how many valves I have left !

A bit more time and a bit more money and it will be perfect, I said on the track day it was quick but I knew it had so much more left in it, its just the fine tuning now to get it right but it should all come good in the end :)

thats Torque steer causing that isn't it?

an LSD will help a lot to reduce/get rid of it.

the car is fitted with a Quaiffe, seems as if the passenger front wheel just moves back and thus turns the car that way, very strange, not really an issue right now until I get the head sorted later

Just removed the old one, done 8 exhaust valves, 6 guides, probably the other 2 are fooked 2 but not gonna bother using that head for now, just gonna fit another one I had for sale on, I'll post up some pics in a min

glad I didn't break anything else, must of been quite an impact, never mind

the wheels were a lucky find from ebay, as they are 6.5*16'sthey are ?30 more a wheel than the 7*16's, I got a very good deal on them

Mo's are available upto 17" in my style then the 18's are a different design, I once had a set of the real old ones which I cant find anywhere anymore, they were more flat spoked, looked smart on my old white nova from back in the day

This is looking really nice. In actually fact its probably the first XE i've seen that doesnt look like its about to explode from under the bonnet. It looks like it belongs.

I have a set of them in 15's. Got them off a mate of mine a few months back and stuck them on my run around. They changed the design a few years back so they are quite hard to find now.

What top mounts are you runing? eccentric or concentric? If its protec eccentric mounts then you have them upside down, as the circlip should be below, and the other way round gives much more adjustment!

I had loads of problems with mine until i realised they were the wrong way round, circlip and done shape'd bit at bottom, giving me huge adjustment capabilitys.

okay, just checked through the TAS and protec book, according to there pics I amusing them the correct way up, it seems the dome is machined to fit into the original strut hole, my top mounts are concentric so I cant see what difference it would make if they were the other way up,

explain what you have heard? I'm gonna call protec tomorrow about it anyhow

interesting topic this seems to be

krobinson

Mine are eccentric, so they have the holes all round the top, so i can move the top around where i want.

With the mount the other way round, dome facing up, it just fits in the hole and no more, so i basically cant adjust it anywhere!!

If you look at the pic of my mounts the right way up, i can move the top of the strut pretty much anywhere, giving me huge adjustment!

I've seen a few pics of these mounts and i've not seen one with the mounts the same way round as me yet, but mine must be right, as a circlip cant support the weight of a car? My way the circlip is at the bottom!

I've heard nothing really, i found it out through trying it, after some guy on mig mentioned how a circlip shouldnt support a car!

I asked on here before, and no one showed me a pic of how there's sit. I know rick, CP, Jim, lee haslam and martin kelson run them.

So guys, get pics of yours!!

didn't have time today to ring protec but checked in the nova build manual and it shows concentric mounts being fitted the way i have them, I see your point on how yours work being fully adjustable. I'll try and get some answers tomorrow, mine do have 4 bolt holes but you can only use them if the mount is the other way up.

Maybe Rick could post up a pic of his, I'll do a search for some pics of his bay

Right i take it these mounts dont have captive bots then as there adjustable, well if i was to fit some then all i need ot do is find a bot long enough to go through and still hold on the strut brace correct? as im getting some nasty inner tyer scrubbing,i never noticed it till now,as its worn that much its effecting the way the car handles, you feel it pulling etc..

Bit of a late update, but here goes.

Since I last posted anything about the car I've been up the pod twice.

I'm still running the standard engine with just a 50shot of gas, I've been running 15" alloys on the front and messing around with suspension stiffness a bit,

My previous best was 13.7 which I was well happy with as i said to myself if I could crack into the 13's then it would all be worth it.

Well at Redline Rumble I removed the passenger seat, and fitting the gas bottle in its place, first run I got a 14.5 after getting some huge wheelspin on gas in 1st gear, after a small break I thought I'd give it another go and with a better launch and a crap gearchange into 5th I got a 13.4! Obviously I'm well happy with that and I know there is a lot more to come,

Here are a few piccys of the car at the mo, excuse the fact its not clean please, I've been busy lol

A quality shot taken by Adam Moran when we hit Southend a month ago

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v306/Jatec/southend.jpg

Also after the track day I realised that v6 brakes aren't just upto my driving so I purchased these back of my mate, they were one of the first batch of Reyland brake kits and me and my mate had them on our let nova and they were awesome, just to make things even better I'll have a full rear disc setup going on there too with adjustable bias for those sideways moments, also got some ATE racing blue brake fluid which is apparently great stuff so we'll see what goes once fitted, the downside is I cant run 15" wheels once they are fitted as they are 305mm rotors :( the plus side is a lot more gas is going on with another kit so hopefully I'll see some 12's by summer

calipers look a bit grubby but will clean up but tbh I dont care as its how they work more than how they look :)

As I started a new job last week I thought I'd start making some new purchases,

Got some DS2000 pads on order from Reyland for my brakes which still aren't fitted to the car, hopefully within a month I'll have them on.

Also managed to find myself a minimax nitrous controller going for good money so thought I would buy that in advance before I get the highpower kit, shame its got to sit aroundgathering dust until the end of the month, atleast I'll be able to make the most of the new nitrous kit when it turns up :)

Well its Christmas nearly again and I've had more than enough fun this year with my car, so its time for a mild rebuild and some new bits.

The car is getting the full stripped treatment inside ready for a cage to be made and fitted, I suspect that there wont be any room for much other but seats and dashboard once its fitted so with the extra weight of the cage I will be removing anything now not needed

such as:

roof lining, door cards, rear door cards, all sound deadening, rear seat mounting brackets and a few other bits.

The car will have the whole interior and engine bay painted again, a bit more strengthening will be done when the cage is fitted.

Engine wise, I am sticking with NA power, I got myself a nice freshly built xe with some sensible mods which should see about 210+bhp on the dyno hopefully, Its only let down is not having steel rods fitted so a sensible rev limit will have to be used approx 7.5k

Gearbox and brakes will all be different when done and a few extra guages will be fitted inside.

I'll be able to make the most of the direct port nitrous setup I have on the new engine so I'll be using another 100shot with a Maximiser to gain the most from the system, I expect that I might go onto bigger jets but its not worth it unless your going to start playing with the ignition map which is something I can do on the laptop with some help once its all up and running,

Anyway I took a few photos of todays work, didn't get much done but enough considering how bloody cold it was outside!

lol, It certainly is boring ! Thats probably going to be the one thing that will take the longest to do lol

I was happy with the car but I know it can handle a lot better than it does, hopefully without spending stupid money I'll be able to get it to handle just how I want.

is that still standard XE on gas?

Jonlem

yep totally standard except powercap so I could put the nitrous injector somewhere sensible

it would of done a 12 but it was the last pod of the year and i didn't get anymore runs in.
