Let`s keep it simple: this is a Peugeot 205 van, with a Cosworth motor and 4x4 drivetrain, T16 bodykit and 205GTi interior. See, easy. Now, time to complicate things: it started out as a Vauxhall Astramax. Ah...
You see, Tony Norman ran a delivery business, called Fast Lane Couriers. To promote it, he`d always had a quick van, with trick paint and a hot engine - around the time he decided to build the 4x4 205 he had an Astramax with 2.0-litre 16-valve motor dropped in.

But Tony wanted something quicker, and he decided on a Cossie engine for the Astramax. He advertised the 16-valve engine, but the bloke who came to see it fell in love not just with the engine but with the van as well - the price he offered persuaded Tony to part with it.

That`s when he bought a 1.0-litre 205 van. He stripped it, turned it upside-down, fabricated a transmission tunnel (plus a load of strengthening) then dropped in the engine and drivetrain. He had to fabricate a fuel tank that was just 2in deep in places to clear the new propshaft and rear axle.

By this point the wheels were sticking way out from the bodywork, as they would because a Sierra`s so much wider than a 205. Loads of the original metalwork was cut away, and T16 wide arches were grafted on.

All this makes it sound so easy but we all know that`s not the case. What`s important, though, is to understand how unfeasibly quick this little van was. Remember it had fibreglass in place of much of its metal and a tuned 350bhp Cossie engine under the bonnet. It just took off, accelerating so hard for so long in each gear that you wondered if you`d ever recover. It was absolutely mad.
