View Full Version : tune the 1.4 or 1.6 it
just a quick question really what would be the most sensible thing to do
a) keep the 1.4, std apart from ,jr filter , msd 4-1 manifold +full system
i have a ported and polished head to fit and a ap racing clutch also
and say maybee tune this a little
b)fit seans old gsi lump as std apart from pipercross filter
although im also thinking of t40s  seany lol these are jetted for a 1.6 but there is no manifold for them
which engine would they perform better on
cheers carl
go for the 1.6 and keep your exhaust ,head and clutch from the 1.4 and then bolt the t40's to it
I would say 1.6 but you have cheap tax with the 1.4
I'm in a similar state of mind, my plan for a while has been to get a 1.4SRi engine and tune it, with a piper 285 cam, stage 3 head, lighten and balanced bottom end, arp bolts and twin 40s. But nowhere seems to have any good 1.4's for sale :| but recently theres been loads of low milage 1.6's for sale so might go the whole hog and get a 1.6 running the same spec, but then I think of the cheap road tax

shove the 1.6 in and leave it registered as a 1.4 then
not like the DVLA / VOSA / Cops are gonna be able to notice the difference, as long as its insured properly your fine

If you put the 1.6 in and leave it on the log book as a 1.4, you can't insure it legally can you? surely the insurance company can check what engine size is registered to the vehicle.
Also, if you get a producer and the logbook says 1.4 and your insurance says 1.6, then you're going to be in trouble.
Dont lie on the logbook and dont lie to the insurance.

its modified anyway so what comes up on the insurance computer is goona be wrong - they'd need to override it manually anyway,
the only problem would be the DVLA/Vosa what ever theyare called now getting wind of it and giving you a fine for not having it taxed properly im also sure if u taxed it then filled the log book in and sent it off your existing tax disk wouldnt be changed, only when u came to renew would it go upto 1600 costs
Dont lie to insurance or dvla simple as

just keep the v5 filled in and ready to post... i did this with my 2.0 for 3 years... if you get pulled and checked just tell them it's only been in a week and the letters in the post.... then post it as soon as you get home!
"stage 3 head" ?! WTF is one of those lol
carl, if the head you have is a 1.4 head then id just sell it on and use that money to get a manifold etc to fit the cars toa 1.6 and play from there really. as the 1.4 head is gay

do a 1.6. i've played with 1.3/1.4's with t40's etc but they don't even come close to some of the t45'd 1.6 i've seen on this site. you get like 180bhp/tonne or something stupid like that and they handle like go karts!!!!
stick with the 1.4 untill you can afford a 16v. 1.6 or 2.0 in the longrun it's the best way to go
stick with the 1.4 and tune it
waste of money tuning a 1.4. all parts are the same price for them both but give more returns when in the 1.6

I went the 1.6 route after blowing two 1.4's and never looked back
what riggy forgets to mention are these important factors to this.
he has another shell which is fairly mint in the garage. he wants to shell it as a gsi.
his cars mot is due in jan/feb (so it could fail on welding, and scrap the car)
he has already got the 1600 engine, the 1400 engine with head work done.
i personally think riggy should wait till the mot is done. prep the other shell for the 1600 (if he's bored and has too much spare time on his hands)
and see what the outcome is of his mot.

i know what you mean but surely you must have felt the buzz of beating someone and telling them "oh yeah mate its a 1.4"
plenty of times mate. but i'm never going to get 180bhp from a 1.4. a 1.6 16v on the other hand will see that without breaking a sweat
is that next for you then ben?

i wouldn't say a waste of money.
its good if you want to keep insurance low.
and if you have only been driving for a short while, tuning a 1.3/1.4 as apposed to a 1.6 is better as your less likely to kill yourself with the power.
is that next for you then ben? don't know. i'm sort of attached to my 1400 now, but i think in the future i will have a 1.6 16v on tb's or carbs. 8v's can't compare with that, i know dan's 1.6 is quick but if he had done the same to a 16v think what that would be like. miles' old one is a good example, another 1/2 second quicker than dan's, and that's with a shell similar to what dan had before the rebuild
right as sean said im goin to wait for mot in jan :( then if not a lot of work is needed then the 1.6 will be goin in and i will run it as a 1.6 for a year
in the mean time my other shell will be minted up  and will be jst waiting for the 1.6 to come out of mine at the end of its life
but cheers anyway lads
