View Full Version : Cambelt question on a 1.2!!

I am curently, servicing my 1.2 mk1 Nova, but i dont have a clue how to check the cambelt, i know where it is, and can see it,
how do i know whether it needs to be changed coz i dont know when it was last done.

Any help considered

if you dont know when it was last done do it basically, they dont cost much so its better to be safe than sorry

You can look at the condition of the belt but that can be misleading, so best bet is to do the cambelt, might as well do the water pump aswell while your there, chances are thats never been changed, and its easy when the belts off.

Does any 1 know how much it is likley to cost me if i got a garge to replace the Cambelt, coz i aint got the time on my hands at the moment.

about 3-4 hours garage time at say ?30 an hour

i never changed my cam belt in 5 years / 50K and the engine is safe anyway so if it does snap you just get towed home, re dial the timing in and put a new belt on lol

alrite but i thought if the cambelt snapped in service, the engine would get damaged i av heard pistons would get bent., or some shit like that

my garage charged me ?20 suplied and fitted on my 1.4 :D

on some engines then yes if the cambelt snaps its possible that the valves will bend, as the piston will return to TDC without the valve retracting, not nice. However as far as i remember the 1.2 isnt an interference engine so if the worst did happen and the belt snapped its unlikely any valve damage would occur. Youd just give yourself a load more hassle than going and gettin it done now thats all
