Been trying with a mate to wire a astra gte dash into his nova gte all wired up but for some reason only the handbrake, full beam, indicator icons come on the dash. The actual speedo dosen't light up or does the dash light up when you turn the lights on.

Can anyone help? cheers

I'm too lazy to write it so here is the guide I have on file! Happy Reading:

Vauxhall Astra Mk2 GTE Digital Dash wiring

The digital dashboard that Vauxhall used in the Mk2 GTE is an excellent piece of kit, and I'm surprised they never used it in more models or even updated it. When I got a digidash for my Mk2 SRi, I couldn't find a decent wiring guide anywhere on the net; just scraps of information here and there, so I set out to compile all the relevant stuff, and hence this page.
Tools needed
Soldering iron, long cross-head screwdriver, torque-head driver, wire stripper, crimping tool, test lamp or multimeter, 10mm spanner, 10mm socket complete with long extension bar.
Dashboard operation
After switching on the ignition, a function check starts automatically and within five seconds all segments of the strip scales increase from the minimum indication, in approximately two seconds, to the maximum indication and remains there for approximately three seconds. The digital speed shows for about two seconds the figure 125 or 127 (depending on the model), the number 288 then appears. The check mode will be interrupted as soon as the engine is started. The automatic operation of the check mode permits seeing at a glance, if all displays are controlled. With a failure, trouble can be recognised immediately. The segments of the various displays and warning zones remain switched on and complete up to the end of the check mode. When the engine is started the check mode will be interrupted. The actual values will then be indicated immediately.
Related information
1. Speedo works up to 157 mph and the rev counter resets at maximum rpm.
2. Switch - 1 showing for 175/70R13 or 185/60R14 (uses six impulse transducer) - digidash displays "125/288" on powerup.
Switch - 2 showing for other tyres (Haynes wiring diagram says 185/65 R14) (uses 16 impulse transducer) - digidash displays "127/288" on powerup.
3. The following tyre sizes are quoted in the Haynes manual for the Astra mk2, and the overall diameter of the tyre is given.
175/70R13 - 22.65 inches - 57.4 cm
185/60R14 - 22.74 inches - 57.66 cm
185/65R14 - 23.47 inches - 59.44 cm
4. The speedo works even when reversing!
It is possible to fit the Digidash into other Vauxhall models (I've even seen it working in a modified Ford Escort), and so he's a guide to the wiring.

I've copied some questions and answers out of an old magazine that gave a 'how to' on installing the Astra digital dash into a Vauxhall Nova:
Q. Nothing happens when the ignition is switched on.
A. If no part of the dash illuminates, then chances are its not receiving any power through the black leads, or more likely it has a bad earth somewhere. Make sure all connections involving brown wires are all good.
Q. Some parts of the dash work, while others don't.
A. Use the above plug lists to establish each wire to each component. Then, check all the connections are sound. If this doesn't work use a test lamp or multimeter to establish if the corresponding wire(s) is (or are) carrying power - if it isn't, suspect either a broken power feed lead or non-functioning sender unit.
Q. The dash seems to work but doesn't register speed.
A. First of all, the dash doesn't register under 5mph. Otherwise, suspect a problem either with the transducer wiring or the transducer itself.
Further notes on the dashboard's operation
Oil pressure gauge - The scale covers from 0 to 500Kpa (5.0 bar) and is represented by yellow segments continuously increasing from the left. With the engine at operating temperature, the oil pressure must not fall below 200Kpa (2.0 bar). If the oil pressure drops below the figure quoted, help must immediately be sought from an authorised Vauxhall-Opel dealer. If there is a loss of oil pressure and the oil pressure has reached the switch point of the oil pressure switch the red warning zone flashes. Simultaneously, the warning zone fulfils also the function of the oil pressure warning lamp in the usual manner:
With the ignition switched on and the engine not running, the warning zone lights up without flashing, it goes out after starting the engine: on idling, with a hot engine it may light up, but must go out with increased rpm.
If the lamp flashes whilst driving, immediately stop the vehicle, switch off the engine and seek expert assistance before continuing your journey.
Voltmeter with warning zone - Indication takes place with 6 yellow segments continuously increasing from the left.
On starting, the indicator must not fall in the zone below the red block and with driving must be to the right of the orange block. If these values are not reached, consult an authorised Vauxhall-Opel dealer.
Where voltages exceed 15 volts or go below 9 volts when the engine is running, the red warning zone flashes.
The warning zone also fulfils the function of the alternator warning lamp in the usual manner: with the ignition switched on and the engine stationary, the warning zone lights up without flashing, it goes out after the engine is started and when the engine rpm increases over idling speed. If flashing occurs whilst driving: stop the vehicle, switch off the engine, as the battery is no longer being charged and also the cooling system can be affected. Seek expert assistance before continuing your journey.
Coolant temperature gauge with warning zone - Indication takes place with 6 segments, increasing from the left. With overheating of the coolant, all segments light up as a warning. In addition, the red warning zone flashes.
Check for normal operating temperature.
Blue - The engine has not reached its operating temperature
Yellow - Normal operating temperature.
Red - Temperature too high - danger for the engine - switch engine off. Seek expert advice.
