Maybe this should be in the tech section?
My 1.3Gig HD 200MMX pc is getting slower and slower. Its about 3/4ers full up but i've got a lot of business software loaded that I can't dump plus all the usual Microsoft "slow it down" shitware. Should I buy summink new and snazzy (if so what) or should I get in there with me spanners and give it the equivalent of twin 40's. I know there are peeps on here who know a shitload about this stuff so don't pretend you don't!

My recent upgrade was a 1GHz Athlon and new M/Board all costing a tiny fee of ?126! This price was from a mate who runs his own shop who gets huge discounts. First thing I suggest is getting from ram. It makes a big difference.
From what I remember (and I am probably wrong) the type of memory is Non-Ecc Simms, which have to be upgraded in pairs. Either in 2x16MB, 2x32MB or 2x64MB. I suggest going into a local computer shop and seeing what they say then go hunting on the Internet for the products cheaper or mail me what you want and I may be able to sort something out.

If you want any software let me know what you want and I can sort it free of charge. I work for a Lotus and Microsoft Partner!!

on a 200mmx you will not be running simms, it will be SDRAM - mine was.
you can get 512mb of sdram for about 50quid at the moment which will make it faster.
alternatively, get an AMD Duron (nice and cheap) and a motherboard for it and watch it fly. (comparatively speaking obviously) it wont be as quick as a pentium4 2ghz but will be VERY VERY quick compared to old 200mmx.

Opps, sorry. Was it the first Pentium machines that had Simms and the memory had to be installed in pairs then?.

I still suggested going to a local computer shop first and seeing what they say then go hunting for it cheaper. E-mail what you want and how much they charge, I'll see what I can do. It has been ages since I have done tech support. I am more software oriented now. I have obviously lost my touch :( (Either that or I never had it to start with)

lol

mate do what i did

i bought a little p166

and used it for the net

it wanst that bad actually but here comes the plan.

the p166 was about 5/6 years old, chuck sum beer at it and blow it up, then claim on house insurance for, like for like swap, becuase its old then u get one as if it was brand new today, in real terms that ment i took my computer to a shop and told the bloke to make it mint and the house insurance would pay

so i got athalon 1.2ghz machine for free and i got to keep my old harddrive(plus all my porn etc etc)(and they fitted another hardrive etc etc etc etc)

so

1can ov stella will sort your probs mate (make it 2 then u can have a nice drink while u watch it blow up)

LMAO @ Micky! You really make me laff M8 - never fail to amuse:D:D:D. You've def. got a different take on life! I don't think I've got enuff neck to do that but thanks anyway!

Since you all seem to be leaning towards tuning it up, I'll go back to the local shop I got it from and see if the monkeys will do me an upgrade or summink. They make up their own PC's anyway and this ones been very good for the last 5 yrs so I rekon they'll see me right. Cheers for the help:)

make sure you tell em if they put quicker processor and a decent graphics card (32mb or above) to include a decent sized case fan (80mm would do) to help keep it cool.
Less chance of system crashes then as the inside of the case gets hotter and hotter.
Use dot happen all the time with mine until i put it in a really big case and put 4 fans in it... a mate told me that would do the trick, removing the urine, so i did it anyway, totally over the top but it works, nice and quick and never over heats - ever.

lol wisewood wot u on about, u can get P200MMX machines which use both SDRAM or EDO, depends on the mobo really, diff chipsets support diff ram types.

Email me if you want proper advice, dicko can vouch for my supreme knowledge ov poots. And no I aint a geek but poota hardware is all I know about thats all. Used to own my own ickle overclocking and extreme coolin venture, imported shit from the USA and sold it for 50% profit. Bonus :)

oh yeh and u ain't seen nothing till you see the multi disk optical reader i have at work...... it takes more space than a double garage and has a mechanical arms to change the disks!!!

First things to do CP. Memory as was mentioned above cheap at mo. Rip out old memory. Bound to be simm slots that are filled. Then get 1 128mb and 1 256mb stick of sdram memory from www.cclcomputers.co.uk giving 384 mb of ram (the most win95 or 98 can handle and on a p200 i reckon you'll be running one of these 2)

Thinks it's about ?25 for 256mb at mo although prices going up again so grab while you can. The reason to rip out old memory is that simms and sdram don't work well together.

Next thing would be hard disk with 20 GB ones available for about ?75 Some people say big drives don't work with early PC's but as long as you are running windows 95 with service pack 2 or any later version of windows you'll be fine.

Processor and m/board upgrades are getting cheaper but a bit of a bigger job than hard disk and memory. Easy if it works first time, f**ker if it doesn't.

If you want any more info mail me and i'll answer any questions you've got. M_Clapham@yahoo.com

Good girls go to heaven, bad girls come with me :D

Ok well defrag ur HD m8 for one... that may help. Uninstall shit you dont use to free up HD space. Then go to www.tweak3d.net and find a guide on cleaning up and tweaking out windows for performance, it may or may not help. You say you have dimms so go buy 128 megs or 256 megs of cheap PC133 ram whilst it's still at a low price, and then bin ur simms! If you're a little bit confident with fucking around in your bios, then check the guides for bios tweaking @ www.rojakpot.com i think it is. Quite tricky if you're a bit dense with PC's :)

Fenix you're wrong about big HD's, you often need to flash the mobo's bios for it to support/detect bigish HD's, you're best of trying and seeing before you start fuckin about flashing tho if you aint totally clued up cuz if u naff it up, you'll have a reasonably dead mobo. Also, 256 megs of ram is enuff really unless you're a gamer etc and you use well chunky software like photoshop and stuff like that.

email me if u want prices on new shit.

BTW ste it's one thing building PC's and having one for xxx years but it's another knowing about the in's and out's of the hardware and the best stuff to buy, how to optimise things etc.. I am a bit heavy on making sure me PC runs as fast as poss, and I've only had me own poots for 4 yrs, but I have done a LOT of research and come to know a shitload about performance pc's, hardware, optimisation, overclocking, cooling etc

I used to work @ overclockers.co.uk an'all when they were small, I was always on the phone tellin peeps stuff which is basic to me but rock hard to them. And sayin that, I have a serious lack in the practical aspect in relation to how much I know! I've only built a handful of PC's really :)
