took my 1.4sr for a long trip yesterday, following some mates, in a saxo vtr and a 1.1 106. we were shifting along, but as we approached 100mph, my engine was reving towards 5000rpm, they went off at 110+ but really didnt want to cain it any mor ethan that so had to back off. after 45mins at around 80-95 engine started making a not very nice rattle, backed off more and it got a bit better. cruised it back later in the day and sounded better, but still a bit rattley. first any ideas what the rattle is, sounds like its coming from the head, rather than the bottom end. and secondly any1 else with a 1.4 what do u rev at to get 100ish, do i have a dodge gearbox with the wrong ratios? hope not, but my old 1.3sr seemed a lot happier and less reving at those speeds. any helps plz?

youve got a 1.4 sr gearbox with close ratio gears. i used to have one. did 5000rpm at 100mph. as for the noise check your cam followers, they wear very easily. remove the cam cover and have a look for worn parts, the camshaft usually is marked. http://www.novaload.net/features/viewfeature.php?ref=2141

so was the close ratio box only fitted to the later sr's then? does it make the acceleration much better? to be honest think i prefered the old sr's box, makes cruising at high speed better and less of a strain on the engine.

but as we approached 100mph,
tut tut tut :|
so whats better
how about 70mph?
nathan.
07-11-04, 03:36 PM
not sure mate. i think acceleration is quicker. mine was a j reg so it was the last of the 1.4sr's.

my SRi revs at 3500rpm at 70mph.
Nova~Lolly's Sr revs at the same now but did rev at about 2800 - 3000rpm at 70 before the gearbox was changed. It now says F10 but was an F13 before but not the close ratio box
Her accelleration is much better now

and you can still get stopped, due to speeding
I had a similar rattle m8, while on the motorway, also coming from the cam area, i then found out that i needed oil, and that my oil guage dont work,
It was as stupid as that

my mates fiesta made a similiar noise on the way back from wales last sunday, it shot some bits of the engine out the front of the block, mainly parts of the conrods.

on my bike damn it, i wont be happy then :D

lol, my old sr blew two rods striaght out the side of the block, and it still ran and drove!!, i put a bit of oil in i had half way through my journey and it seemed a bit better. perhaps i will do and oil change so that i know how much is in there. dipstick seems to get a differnet reading everytime i put it in.

in 5th gear on my F10 i hit 70mph at 3000rpm.
I'm not condoning speeding, but when you are on an Open A road with no traffic (early morning or at night) driving at 70-75mph is breaking the Law but you are still driving sensibly and safely.
I never speed in built up area's, always stick to 30 & 40mph limits.
(There are no 50 limits round here.)

completely irrelevent but at 6700rpm in 5th on mine an the needle on the speedo looks like it trying to snap
hendrix
07-11-04, 08:54 PM
haha excellent phil. my mate had a chipped GTE and he had the needle pointing vertically downwards hitting the limiter in 5th. but knowing nova speedo's it would be about 128 maybe as opposed to him braggin his 1.6 nova would do 140
that means your 18 and you drive 2ltr nova
give the boy a banana he can add lol

60MPH, 5th gear = 3000RPm on a Close Ratio Box in a 1.4SR. 100 = 5000RPM. Probably wont get past 110-115MPh as thats when the cam cuts down on the power.
The rattling is probably knackered crankshaft bearings.

5grand on 0.89 ratio (ie CR 5th or WR 4th) with 3.94 final drive on 195/45r15 tyres is 92mph - although my bro's 1.2i used to show just over a ton at 5k
i had my bro's 1.2i at 5600rpm on a LONG downhill stretch which is 105mph - the speedo was indicating 125mph
on the flat a 1200 wont get much over 95 although the speedos show total wank over 80ish
I've got an F13 CR Gearbox with a 4.18 Final drive, running 195/45/16 tyres and I reach 50mph at 3000rpm in 5th gear.

50mph at 3000k!
with my 3.94fd i hit 70mph at 3k. Thats with a w/r.
imagine what a 3.74 would be.

...dipstick seems to get a differnet reading everytime i put it in.
make sure the car has been sat w/out the engine running for a while B4 checking the oil. Also make sure where you are parked is FLAT. i park on the road and i cant check my oil there because the camber of the road totaly throws the reading!

Yep, but my acceleration should be quicker than if i had a 3.94FD
Jim
Nathan1600, ur J reg (1991) ISNT one of the last SR's made!
You can get em on a K reg (1992, like mine) and even a L (1993) :P
Neway, i happen to have a close ratio g'box in my SR and 5100rpm is a digi dash proven 125mph!
Now apparently, Corsa SRi's (108mph) are faster then nova SR's (103mph?). ive raced my mate, in his Corsa SRi till we were both flat out and low and behold i ANHILATED him!

no CR box is gonna do 125mph at 5100rpm in 5th
if u put the longest possible FD ratio of 3.55 in it you'll only be doing 105mph
infact the only way your gonna get that is with a Wide box and a 3.74fd
also my 1600 16v struggles to do much more than 130mph (albeit with a 3.55 final drive - i't might go a bit further with a different gearbox) and my old 1.4mpi engine would start struggling about 115mph

yeah.
When you do 1/4 mile do you have to change into fith gear then?
Would a w/r be quicker than a c/r on 1/4 mile cause you have to do 1-less gear change?
a gear change will cost you a few tenths right?
I couldnt tell you if i need to go into 5th as I've not done a 1/4mile run with the engine and gearbox yet.
Jim
well, how come a 1.4 16v standard tigra hit the limiter @ 128mph??
wen the said tigra (best mates) will not start catching up with my nova until i get over 100mph??
wen i bought my nova i was told that it had a close ratio g/box etc
so, the qeustion is = how cum my nova beats corsa/tigra's and keeps up with nova GSi's?? :|
so, the qeustion is = how cum my nova beats corsa/tigra's and keeps up with nova GSi's??
