View Full Version : 1.4 16v or 1.6 8v gsi engine or now 1.7 TD

I am considering changing the engine in my 1.5 TD to either of the above.

The insurance is cheaper in the 1.4 but is it much slower than the 1.6 gsi engine?

Does the tank need changing if changing from diesel to petrol and will it need new mounts?

any other suggestions for engines that insurance won't be ridiculous but will be faster than 1.5 Td and the conversion will be under 500 quid?

1.7td engine... and a tune up and don't tell the ins

considered that but company said minimum of 800 quid for conversion

would that be quicker than both 1.4 16 v and gsi?

You can tune up the 1.4 16v engine as well as if not better than the 1.6 GSi, and pay less tax! Go for the 1.4!

to tune a 1.4 16v to 1.6 power figures will cost more than the extra tax & insurance on the 1.6.

Plus with the 1.6 you can tune it to 125bhp+ quite easily.

And 8v's are generally cheaper to mod than 16v's.

The 1.4 16V is very tunable and is cheaper on insurance and tax (?65 a year different!!) with the simple additions of a tubular exhaust manfold and a mantzel powerbox type inlet you'd be lookng at 120BHP, and you haven't even touched the inside of the engine yet either.
You can out tune the 1.6 by miles, simpley becuase the head design can't be compared. The only problem with a 1.4 16v is the transponder bit, you need to have the key and chip read from the doner car.
Plus it's nice to be different.

slap in a 1.7 diesel and do the fuel pump and actuator mod then theres 110bhp and sh1t loads of torque

I was thinking of a 2.0 16 v when i'm 21 or can afford the insurance so was thinking it might be better to switch to petrol now to make the 2 l conversion easier later on?

Or is a 1.7 TD the quickest and cheapest option for now then rip it all out for a petrol lump later on.

Yeah, 17td's are everywhere and dirt cheap, no messy wiring and enough torque to pull an Artic lorry Trailor. nippy as fuck as well.

I allways thought the 1.5TD's were quite rapido for what they are ?

yes a 1.7TD would be the best mod, Maybe the turbo can be tweaked/uprated to see some decent power ?

also, you'l get the nicest sound ever imo, a dump valve :-D

so does a 1.7 Td just drop straight in no hassle?

i have a 1.4 16v engine for sale. engine, loom, ecu, transponder and chip, all ancillarys, drive shafts, engine mounts. all nuts and bolts.

make me a offer.

as for getting a td engine, you would be better off with a petrol. eaiser to drop in, and eaiser to tune. better in the long run (unless it's for fuel economy)

the engines are equal only the intercooler its diferent, becaus 1.5 does not have it :P, but i think the 1.7 it equal fit.

you have to swap a few bits from the 1.5 onto the 1.7

Any body done this conversion?

Is it a straight swap or wot needs swapping over?

i have just put a 1.4 16v in mine and took a 1.6 8v out, the 1.4 is a little bit slower but is a more reliable and better sounding enigne with great tuning potentials, also its nice to be different and have a 16v in a nova!!!

Cheaper tax though, and with a manxtel power box type inlet set up it will be straight up to 110BHP

I would go with the 1.4 16v, nice power, and its a little 16v engine.
They sound mint with a decent cone filter and exhaust as well. 8)
Diesels are good, economy, and turbo etc, but at the end of the day its a diesel.
