Am gonna but a gearbox for a valver conversion, c20xe but dont know whether to use an f16 or an f20.

Can anybody tell me what the differance is and why one of them, if any, is preferred to the other?

Cheers ppl :D

f20 is slightly stronger.... f16 can be got in different ratios

i'd get an f20

i have a f16 box on my valver.

anyway this is what i have been told.

f16 = 160 bhp
f20 = 200bhp
f28 = 280bhp
etc etc etc.

so a f16 is ok if you dont plan to mod the engine too much.

but then i have also heard other stories of people with f16's pushing out loads more power.

is it power or torque?

Its a torque rating, not a bhp rating.

cant remember if its LBft or NM tho

its in the TIS database

if its torque based will i be ok with my mods that i am getting?

anyway

i am now getting a f20 box for mine.

sorry for post steal, but what difference is the 20 going to make over the 16. top end or acceleration?

Cheers for the info lads, its already pushing 170bhp just with the courtney head so makes sense to go for the F20.

Dunno what torque its producing though,
But the way its progressing, by the sounds of it, it would chew an f16.

Cheers for the info lads,
the thread's urs

i can vouch for the fact that its a torque measure, mine has just under 160 ft lbs of torque and on an f16 box it is wining after only 1 track day and a good play on the roads (quiet ones) for a few months

im gonna be hopefully be putting a f16cr on my 16v hopefully it'll be alright cos im running 181lb of torque because i want better acceleration.

ummmmm the parts in most of the gearboxes are the same, appart from one bearing being bigger in the F16 box.

so if the parts are the same how do they get a greater torque rating? hmmmmmmm

think about it

perhaps they're made stronger or put together different. otherwise why would they have different names?

i.e. F10/5 WR has exact same ratio's as F13/WR does it not?

as far as i can see the small block boxes are all put together the same

its just the casing changes for the larger clutch stuff?!

the bearings will go a bit faster if you put more power/torque through helical cut boxes as there is an axial load placed on the gear (by nature of the mesh), so you could claim that your gearbox wasnt up to scratch with the power, but its got not a lot to do with the general mechanics inside
