Hi all,

My m8s Nova 1.4i with 126k miles has a bad humming/droaning which getting louder with speed what ever gear your in including neutral
so we are suspecting a drivshaft is on the way out of a bearing,
How's the best way to find out if its a bearing or a drivshaft, We are ruling out the gearbox as it is the same in all gears and only changes with road speed.
Had the same problem with a 84 MG Montego turbo and turn out to be a failing drivshaft

Any ideas, has this happen to anyone before?

Will 1.0 1.2 drive shafts/hubs fit a 1.4 as there are only a few base mk1's in the local scrappy:(
Or any other posibilitys?

Cheers

Martin

to be honest i dont think drive shafts hum or droan, i think they clunk and donk.

I would replace both fron bearings, about ?15-20 a bearing set, both fronts, get a garage to press them in, i took the hubs to a Vauxhall dealer, one of the kids that works there did it for ?20 cash in hand.

Its unlikely to be a driveshafts,

To test if its the bearings, jack the car up and spin the wheel freely, if it does not rotate in a free manor and seems to stick and stop suddenly then that bearing is fuct.

Do it with the front and back wheels, coz if your matye likes his hand brakes the back ones are probably funked

Ok thanks m8 will try that later,

It's never been hand brake turned by us so hopefully the rears are ok, its only the front which the noise is coming from,

if you jack it up and the bearings are feked, judging by the amount of droan ur gettin, u should be able to wobble the wheel. If that's the case then ye, its the bearings.
