my car knocks at the front end most of the time when i set off-forwards or backwards and sometimes when i steer when going very slowly.

I can feel the knock in the steering and doesnt feel very healthy. it doesnt affect driving in any way but something must be on its way or about to give. Its not the front panel, cross member etc as they are new and have just been seam welded.

Any ideas???

check the wheel bolts!

also you may have a ball joint dying, or suspenstion top mount

does it knock all the time, or just when going over bumps etc?

Also the Sliders in the brakes can do it, I just ingored it lol. Like a click click click at slow speeds and also setting off reversing etc. any movement really they are attached to the hubs.

yes when i go over bumps it does it aswell, ive noticed its any bit of pull/movement on the wheel like steering at slow speed, bumps, pulling off, doesnt do it when braking hard (tested these today). Doesnt do it all the time, mainly just when im reversing up my drive and down the low kerb onto the road and pulling off.

I had a jamex -60mm suspension kit on and since my front arches are scraping all the time i have put my old gsi stuff back on. I thought it may have been something loose on the suspension but it still does it after i changed it. Wheel nuts are nice and tight lol ive had them come loose before but that makes things shake more

When my old front panel knacked up it snapped the metal bar connected from the crossmember to the ?bottom suspension arm? and the wheel literally pushed right to the front of the arch. this obviously strained a lot of components so could this have knackered the ball joint?

Thanks robb now i know whats making that turning rubbing/clicking noise when i go slow, its been doing my head in for ages!

how odd I was about to post a topic on the very same subject.

I installed some 60mm shocks and springs last night, found a puncture in the front right and replaced it with a spare. Now I get this awful knocking noise coming from the front right, not had chance to get the wheel off and check yet but thinking about it at dinner time.

It's relative to the speed, dissapears when breaking and gets less when steering to the left. It's really bad and pained me driving to work with it this morning! (luckily its only just down the road)

I have the same prob on my Gsi. The Track control arm is fecked.
Although I think yours has just passed a MOT, so its doubtful.

Yeah the slider noise is so f****ng annoying, I learnt to ignore it lol.

As for your reversing problems, it sounds like a driveshaft CV joint maybe. Is it when reversing around a corner? Can you get hold of a second hand driveshaft to try and see if it is the driveshaft?

If its the CV's you should be able to hear it when you go arround a roundabout... basically when you are moving with some steering lock on because you are putting the load through them at an angle.

its more common when goin over bumps or there when the car is flexing when turning. I can feel it in the steering and also under the floor where my foot is near the pedals.

Does this narrow it down a bit?

Seems it could be any of the things mentioned above!
