Electric windows into Merit... wiring missing.

Right, spent half this afternoon fitting the loom for the central locking and electric windows, still got to sort out getting it into the doors but the inside part is all done and put back together.

Once I'd got it all connected up (or so I thought) I plugged the motors and solenoids into the loom to test it all... c/l works fine but windows are dead. Thought it may be the switches so I robbed one out if the Cav and tried that but still nothing.

1st problem: I assumed the black wire that plugs into the fusebox was an earth... there was nothing in the fusebox for it to plug into so I made up an earth wire for it. I'm now not so sire it is an earth.

2nd problem: Looked at the fuse box lid and it looks as though there should be a fuse for electric windows in fuse 11... had a look in the fuse box and there aren't any contacts in fuse 11.

So now I'm guessing I must be missing some wiring and wondering if the black on the e/w c/l loom that plugs into the fusebox is supposed to be an earth at all or if it connects to said missing wiring. Can anybody help?!?!

Yeah the earth is the short brown with a crimped loop on ready to be screwed into the chassis near handbrake.

Refit the black from where it came, get a multimeter on the plugs to check for power, red = perm live, black = switched live. If no power then find some.

then try your motors.

the black and red plugs that come on the loom should plug into the holes in the fuse box on the right hane side think its the bottom 2 iirc :D but on saying that when i fitted mine into my "f reg" i didnt have and connectors in these holes as electric window wernt fitted untill the gte in 1990 "g reg" so i ha to rob some connectors from an old fuse box, and piggy back the to a red and black wire that was already there :D

Yeah that's why he needs to test for power, one is perm live other is switched live, if not then the fuse he says that is not there needs to be put in or power taken from elsewhere.

The black is a switched live for the leccy windows so it don't work with no ign on. That is why the window motors don't work, put the black to the fuse box or into another switched feed.

Excellent, thanks guys. The connection for the red plug was in the fuesbox already but the black wasn't, I did find a switched live though so presumably I can just plug it into that provided it has a big enough fuse.

Thanks Ste. My fusebox does not have the connections for fuse 11 and where the black from the e/w loom plugs in (they're just empty holes) so I connected it to earth when it should be switched live :?. I've done the earth behind the gearstick already.

I had a probe with the multimeter and iirc the connection in the top right hand corner was a switched live, would it be ok to plug the black into that seen as the correct wiring is missing? I was hoping the donor GSi would still be in my mate's street so I could raid it again but I think it's gone.

Yep slap it in there, you may need to cut some lugs off the black plug to make it fit.
