Car not going into 5th Gear ?

well i was flying down the road and i went to change to 5th Gear and it went back into 3rd is it @ the top or at the bottom eg

its like that but R is where 1st but push down. If it used to go into 5th but doesnt anymore you might need to reset the gear linkage

Mine has only got 4 gears, im used to drivin in brand new cars when i was having driving lessons, now i drive round n keep goin to you 5th. but on my powerful 1.0 litre there aint 1 :oops:

have you been messing with the gear linkage,check the joint is secure or it could not have been alinned properly

i spoke to a machanic my 1.2l Mk2 Nova Flair has defintly got a 5th gear its just not next to first :(

nope carbs came with 4 gears in 1990

well its got to have a 5th gear i don't think the total speed limit is 50 MPH on a car because that all i can get out of it and it revs like hell on 50 so there has got to be a 5th gear

the 1.2 carbed flair 1991 mk2 i had definately had 5 gears

reset the gear linkage and try again (stationary)


oh and if you went form 4th to 3rd, id get the engine timing checked and maybe check it runs lol

try pushing the gear lever down then try going into 5th

cant you just look on the gearbox? i think it tells you some where the position of the gears.

The gear linkage on top of the gearbox has an inverse pattern of the gear's positions - this wont help you tell whether you have 5 gears or not though, because i have a 4-speed but have a 5-speed linkage, it will just tell you where your 5th gear is :wink:

I'll put this to bed right now. You've lost 5th, is reverse awkward to get, cuz if it isn't, it soon will be. You're linkages are worn and you'll need new ones. Try spraying loads of WD40 directly into your gear lever, under the gear gator and it'll help get 5th, temparerly though.

actually there is a 5th gear so you don't know for a fack because i spoke to a machanic and he said i can get into 5th gear but i have press it down first then move it to the bottom right because my gear linkage is worn and on its way out :( but it will be fixed.

also he not ripping me off because he works for cash in hand with 20 yrs experience as a machanic / electrician and he works with police cars aswell so i don't get charged service charge etc.

well i have been out and tried it - and even though i have a 5-speed gearlinkage under the bonnet, i have only got a 4-speed 'box :(

my old 1.2 luxe had a 5th gear.

right when i put my SR into 5th gear i have to push the gear leaver down to get it in to gear. (like what u do to get reverse)

If you take off the gear gator (black rubber thing the lever sits into) you'll see why you need to push down to get reverse. You should also see why you've to do the same for 5th. It may have been a dodgy repair or 4 to 5 speed convertion. Give that a go and if it doesn't work..... curse and loose your temper. It always works for me!! :wink:
