1.2 that wont run

Have got a 1.2 that had to have the emissions adjusted to get through its mot a couple of weeks ago it was about 6%. Now it wont idle without cutting out , wont run or pull away without the choke pulled out full and even then its still on the verge of cutting out . If I stop at lights for to long it just dies and wont start for a couple of minutes. I put new plugs (checked the gaps before I put them in ) and air filter before the mot , the ht leads are all getting a spark and the fuel pump is working, it hasnt got a fuel filter so thats not blocked up , the rotor and distibutor cap have seen better days but arent that bad. Just took a walk to the garage that did the mot and they said that if it wont run unless the emissions are 6% there is something seriously wrong. Anyone got any ideas , I only brought the car cause the body work is sound so its not the end of the world if the engine is shagged because it was making way for a 2.0 anyway . Just like to keep it going for another month.

are you sure the timing of the ignition is correct?

i had my 1.2 crypton tuned when i first got it 5 years ago and never had to touch the emissions EVER during the time i owned it. the MOT chap was very impressed that it held its tune for so long lol


take it to a diagnosis place for an hour or so. and a new dizzy cap and rotor arm should help things along the way

I have changed the cam belt to but that was before the mot and it run fine no problems at all. Its going to the garage that did the mot for them to have a look tomorrow , so ill ask them to check the timing to be sure, just want it last it another month . Weather has turned a bit cold last couple of days but I didnt think manual chokes were any bother in winter?

there are two types of timing on a carbed car

Ignition (ie sparky sparky)

and

cam/crank timing for the camshaft/crankshaft setup

Picked car up from garage today, they said that everything was set up fine and that for its mileage it was in good order but they increased the emissions a bit to see if it will run better . Seems much better and will tick over without the choke so thats an improvement. They seem to think there may be a problem with the carb, but to see how it behaves over the weekend.
They didnt charge me either so thats a bonus.
