What TSW Wheels are they?
I have a Mk 1 Nova Merit with 195/50/15 TSW Venoms that rubbed like mad....considered using an Angle Grinder to get rid of the wheel arch lip but the size of the Angle grinder compared to the size of the arch lip would be like taking a machete to cut a blade of grass....well, sort of ;) Never having used an angle grinder before and working so close to the fuel tank, i didn't think it a good idea! Which has now paid of as I have a fuel leak due to worn pipes on the bottom of the car! (Only jsut found out!)
I've been working on the arches for a while now...Using a hacksaw, pair of grips and a grindstone drill attachment to smooth it of i have almost done it! Cut slits into lip about 2cm's apart; pull down the metal "tab" with the grips; hacksaw across..then you can continue you like or just try hacking straight across the rest of the wheel arch, easier in slits though.....then after, grindstone it down to its not sharp and wont slash the tyre if it catches....
The wheel arch lip is roughly 2cm's in width, i have reduced them to around about 5mm's....this works perfectly with 2 people in the car, and only rubs the arches with 3 people when hitting a bump....i have noticed that the space between the tyre and the sleeve of the shock absorber is another worry as cornering to fast causes rubbing!
Is your wheel rubbing mainly on the rear right? Does it effect your front tyres at all?
Erm angle grinder is the way for smooth straight cut arches, just go steady with it. Also a file is the best way to remove burrs and smooth the cut after.
Also MK1 beams are thinner than MK2 beams, arch area thinner too.
Offset plays a huge part in what wheels are going to fit in there too.
Paint any bare metal where you have been grinding.

ditto, no point having back seats if no one can sit on them!!
