Ill be asking alot of questions over the next few weeks so bare with me...

Which would be better... a GTE gearbox or a 1.4 carb gearbox?

it depends on what engine you plan to attach them to??
if it was a land rover engine then the chances are both would be usless!! if you have a look at a post that benji put up about gearboxes in technical this may help you find a solution!!

LOL!! The box will be going on the 1.6i GTE engine i have...

But seeing as i have a 1.4 box here, i was just thinking if it would be better/worse to use that instead..

i seen that post, but the final drive technobabble went past what i wanna know...

the 1400 box will not fit mate!! you will have to use your f13 out of the gte!! it will be fine. hope this helps

It might fit. Depends if it's an F10 or F13, both fitted on 14NV engines. F10 box won't fit.

Only way to tell is to check the code.
