Now beat that:
And your mothers sayin ?go to college?.
So u finish college and its wonderful.
U feel so good.
And after all the partying and crazing,
And don?t forget about that drug habit u picked up at school bein around your peers
Hey now you?ll get that 25 thou, job a year and
You?ll spend all your money on crack cocaine, but it?ll be YOUR money.
No more borrowin money from mom for my high
So now you get ur degree tattooed on your back you're so excited about it
If u continue to work at the GAP, after several interviews, Oh my god!
You?ll come in at an entry level position and when u do that
If u kiss enough ass, you?ll move up to the next level
Which is being a secretary?s secretary!
And boy is that great, you get to take messages for the secretary
Who never went to college
Shes actually the bosses niece, so now you're a part of the family

You know what college does for you?
It makes you really smart man
All you kids want to talk in the back of the class. Not me, I listened, ok
I was a hall monitor, This was meant to be,
You know how many classes I took, extra classes extra classes
No I?ve never had sex but you know what, my degree keeps me satisfied
When a lady walks to me says ?hey u know whats sexy??
I say ?no, I don?t know what it is, but I bet I can add up all the change in your purse really fast?.

You keep it going man, you keep those books rolling,
You pick up those books your going to read
And not remember and you roll man.
You get that asociate degree, okay,
Then you get your bachelors, then you get your masters
Then you get your master's masters,
Then you get your doctron,
You go man, then when everybody says quit
You show them those degree man, when
Everybody says hey, youre not working,
Your not making any money,
You say look at my degrees and you look at my life,
Hey i'm 52, so what, hate all you want,
But i'm smart, i'm so smart, and i'm in school,
And these guys are out here making all this
Money all these ways, and i'm spended mine to be smart.
You know why?
Because when i die, buddy, you know
What going to keep me warm, that right, those degrees

And all my people thats drug dealin jus to get by stack ya money till it gets sky high. Kanye West - The College Dropout. Get it. Word.

Yeah and 'Kayne West' is the only one who actually makes any money by selling records to people who can least afford it i.e. those who he sings about

Yes. But he's spreading the message, and also opening doors for others to follow. Those that do the best in life, are those that make the best of whatever they have to make the best of.

Also, you should listent to the Dead Prez. Real Hip-Hop.

And OF COURSE it is going to be 'overplayed' on the radio, since it's BLOWIN' UP!! Would you rather listen to something that gets no airplay because it is whack!? lol

Some people follow the hype, and some people go against it, simpy because there IS a hype. Clear your minds and form your own opinions.

Critics. What the fuck are they all about? 'The critics are raving about/slating it' = a few peoples who work at a magazine/newspaper opinions. I allways make my own mind up.

I don't listen to the radio anyway. Tho i did last night, before i went out, and DMX was on Westwoods Rap Show bigging up Manchester! lmao

Anyway, the thread was more about most degrees being bullshit rather than about Kanye West. Some good points were made in what he said. There's this push into Academia and Universities are more about money-making than education. They are just businesses like everything else. Academic achievement isn't even a measure of intelligence, and almost all of the people that are successful and self-made millionaires and etc, have never been high achievers in education. People with degrees go into jobs and etc. Working for somebody else will never make you as rich as being an entrepreneur.
And with all this push to academia by the academic institutions, career advisors (that profit from advsing for it), government and etc (also with all universities offering courses that are simply there so people can GO, but will be worthless pieces of paper serving the 'graduates' no benefit in the 'real world') has resulted in a shortage in skilled trades, and those that graduade either end up in careers that have no relation to what they graduated in whatsoever, or in lower paid jobs than the 'remedials' that were told to go and do 'modern apprenticeships' because it was felt that they would not achieve in academia.

It's ALL bullshit.

why did you go to uni then marty lol

I agree there is too much of a push to formal education. Soon it will get to a point where you need a "degree" to work on a checkout in a supermarket. I have put degree in "s because these days many institutes seem to hand out degrees like toilet paper. They mean bugger all, especially the hippy subjects like art.

I do disagree with you a little marty. When you come out of uni you may not be on as much as your friends who started work at 16. However chances are that if you are in a professional organisation the salary curve is MUCH steeper than people without the degrees.

Some of my firends left school at 16 and told me education was stupid as they walked into 15K a year jobs. When you are 16 that is a lot of money. However 6 years on they are still on little more than that and i am on much more. Look at Cambridge if you are questioning whether degrees are worth it. There is NO chance a non graduate could start on that salary.
You are right about most self made millionaires are not graduates but you are only looking at one extreme end of the scale. Take "gangster rappers" for example. No education and grew up on the streets. Yes some are multi-millionaires but most are still stuck in the ghettos and are the reason for a lot of gangland crime (e.g. bloods and crips).

Not all people are suited to formal education and do not like to learn theory. This is what the government cannot see. Some people benefit far more by actually learning on the job and a lot of time these people can be better than the formally educated people. Going further in education is a big decision to make and should be thought about in depth. You have to think about whether it will benefit you personally in some way.

^^^ Some valid points there.

Thats one of the reasons I chose my film degree as it had a 50/50 theory/practical divide and strong links for work placements within the industry. It helps geographically though as being in London, most of the specific industry is based there already.

It also has a high rate on students finding employment within six months of leaving.... but personally I did not choose it for that as those statistics are generally slanted. Yes, they found work within six months but was it to do with their chosen subject?

That is one of the problems with getting qualifications etc. You have at the end of the day no actual hands on experience so it is very difficult to find a job. Once you do though things get much brighter. Experience means a lot.

At least with the degree I'm doing I will have an extensive portfolio of work to show prespective companies, another must with regards to the media industry.

I want a degree, because i would like to earn graduate wages. However, i do not want to be a poor tax dodger for three years through my mid 20's... So i probably wont bother  Mostly because we couldnt afford to pay the mortgage and everything else if i was to abandon my reasonable wage.

However, my reasonable wage goes by-by in a couple of weeks as my final redundancy date of October 1st has finally been confirmed in writing, and my settlement figure has been given... its quite nice :D
