No Phil, but as usual, i asked...
'does anyone know the engine sizes and BHP of MK1 golf convertables please? '
i thought they had the 2.0 engines in them
from the mk 2
but the mk 1 gti's were 1800

im guessing that they had the same engine as the GTI's an i think the mk1's where 1.6. I no the mk2's where a 1.8. not sure on power though

maybe but it would have been even better if you car was different colours and a nice standard 1.2 merit with a 2lt in then you might have made him cry :D
And maybe it was funnier as some people Mod their cars and do have 1.2 engines.
I liked it.

What difference does it make? I mean, it's not somethign you can be proud of is it? How can it be. Having a alrger, more powerful engine (whether it was already in there or fitted afterwards, and whether the fact that it's there or not is 'hidden') it is not exactly a personal achievement by pressing the pedal to make THE ENGINE do what it is supposed to do.
Also, i can not relate to people being all excited by sticking a large engine in a cheap car' and then 'blowing off' large expensive cars, like Porches. They're are STILL in a far better car and you are not really proving a point, since it doesn't take a genius to work out how to make something go faster and all you've done is actually gone through the trouble of STILL being in a car that the other persons car is a LOT better than, but sticking in an engine that makes it go faster than it did originally. If they wished to do so themselves, they could have had a whole fleet of wehat you used to 'show them up' with, for the price of one of what they are driving. OR they could in turn make THEIR cars faster by modifying them. Yet you probably don't really have a choice as to what car you CAN modify/own.
It is ALL about money - cars are just status symbols, if not just used for transportation. Even Ferraris and Porches get modified by owners that wish to make them even more faster, or individual. Except they are in a different league than the Ford, Vauxhal, Citroen, Peugeot and etc boys.
put proper 1.2 badges on it if your going to be funny
the one you have on it is just fecking obvious that its not a 1.2
i miean i could put 2.0 bdages on mine to be stilly, but i think RS Turbo ones would be funnier
Or VTS/VTR lol

I do like the Golf Clippers tho, nice cars.
I like my 1.2 sticker, its better then any car and adds 300BHP, your all jelous.
mk1 gti'sare 1600 + 1800's both 8v. the mk 2 gti's are 1800's and 2000 8v's and 2000 16v

mk2 was 1800 8v and 1800 16v
mk3 had the 2.0 8v and 2.0 16v
mk4 has the same 2.0 8v as the mk3 plus the 1.8 20v turbo
mk 4 gti can have a diesel
and the MK4 diesel is faster than the petrol lol
In answer to the original question:
Early MK1's had a 1600 8v chucking out 110bhp and later ones had an 1800 8v providing 112bhp and more mid range torque.

Thankyou MC, nice to see someone can be nice and kind and answer my question.
No problem, it does amaze me how a post can have two pages of replies without anyone actually answering the question!
MC
Mark1 cabby's had a 1400 carb bag of nails under the bonnet!!!
Or at least 2 of my mates have!
small bumper models.
The fuel injected models use K-jet 8v engines.

I change my original statement slightly.
It is still ALL about money in my opinion, but there is nothign wrong with making the best of what you can afford, and making whatever car you have/can afford, 'better' in some way. And you SHOULD feel proud if you're able to 'compete' with those more 'fortunate' than yourself, throught hard-graft in engine transplants and etc etc, allowing you to 'better' something.
Thankyou MC, nice to see someone can be nice and kind and answer my question.
i did answere your question i said 1800
epo, he asked the bhp. 1800 bhp?? you been smokin again?
   oh yeah i just said the engine size my fault and in answere to your question ben
yes
now thats amusing. things like m3 badges on 1.8 bemmers and stuff. all looks shite lol,
i love down badged cars its well amusing. at ford fair this year there was a 1.3 escort which was completely standard apart from an exhaust on the outside but hid a cossy 4x4 engine and runing gear under the bonnet, sooooo much fun to be had there,
